Roger Stone: Trump pardon of D'Souza was a signal to Mueller

  • PARDON ME Conservative filmmaker and author Dinesh D'Souza speaks during the final day of the 2014 Republican Leadership Conference

President Donald Trump tweeted Thursday he will pardon conservative author and filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza, who pleaded guilty to illegally funneling campaign funds to the 2012 Republican challenger to Sen.

New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood on Thursday criticized Trump's pardons of his supporters and called on the state Legislature to change the state's double-jeopardy law so that those who break its laws can not evade justice with a presidential pardon.

"The president said Dinesh, you have been a great voice for freedom".

A frequent complaint repeated Thursday was that Trump bypassed the normal procedures for considering clemency, a process that typically involves investigation by the government's pardon attorney and input from judges and prosecutors who participated in the cases. Stone has claimed that the counsel is investigating his personal life and business affairs because he has no evidence of collusion.

While awaiting trial Blagojevich was a contestant on Trump's reality television show, "Celebrity Apprentice", as was Martha Stewart, who Trump said he would consider pardoning.

In 2014, D'Souza pleaded guilty to reimbursing two of his associates after directing them to contribute $10,000 (Rs 6.74 lakh) each to the 2012 Senate campaign of Republican candidate Wendy Long, reported CNBC.

But political controversy aside, the crime that landed D'Souza in jail centered on campaign finance violations.

In his victory lap Thursday, D'Souza mocked Bharara. That prosecution was led by one of Bharara's predecessors as US attorney, James B. Comey, who would go on to be Federal Bureau of Investigation director and also get fired by Trump.

Japan navy spots suspected China ship next to North Korea tanker
President Trump told reporters the talks were going well and that North Korean officials may come to Washington on Friday. The North and Japan held foreign ministers talks back in 2015 on the sidelines of the ARF in Malaysia.

"I'm very grateful to President Trump for giving me my [full] rights back".

Blagojevich is serving a 14-year prison sentence on numerous counts of corruption, including trying to sell the U.S. Senate seat that was vacated by Barack Obama.

White House spokesman Hogan Gidley, briefing reporters on Air Force One as Trump later flew to Dallas for Republican fundraising events, denied that celebrity was a consideration in whom the president decides to pardon.

D'Souza went on by continuing his argument that he was a victim of "selective prosecution" in which the Obama-era justice system targeted him and other conservatives. And he said that I got to tell you man-to-man have you been screwed.

Trump also pardoned Lewis "Scooter" Libby, former vice president Dick Cheney's chief-of-staff who was convicted of obstruction of justice and perjury, and Kristian Saucier, a US Navy sailor convicted of taking photos inside a nuclear submarine without permission.

The conservative leader also said he's thankful for Trump's actions because now he will no longer be a "lifelong felon". "I can not believe how stupid I was, how careless, and how irresponsible", D'Souza wrote in a statement to the judge.

Mr. D'Souza slammed Bharara in an radio interview too. Trump pardoned Libby in April.

While issuing pardons used to be more common, presidents in the past few decades have waited until closer to the end of their terms before granting large amounts of pardons, particularly those that might be considered controversial.
