Ukraine and Russian Federation traded accusations after Babchenko was reported to have been shot dead in Kiev, in a killing that sent shivers through the journalistic communities in both countries.

"I am sorry, but there were no options here", Babchenko said at the presser.

"I'm still alive", he told the shocked audience.

Gritsak said killing Babchenko was part of a larger alleged plot by Russian security services.

Ukrainian authorities said the goal of the staged murder was to catch the people who'd actually been planning to kill Babchenko. He said they had two suspects in custody: the one who ordered the killing and the hitman who would have carried it out.

The weird scenes were a shock to everyone - including Mr Babchenko's wife, who received an apology from her husband for faking his own death. "I'm sorry for making you live through this", he said.

A dissident Russian journalist who was reported murdered in Kiev has dramatically reappeared alive in the middle of a televised briefing about his own killing by the Ukrainian state security service.

Ukrainian security officials said two people were apprehended as a result of the sting: a Ukrainian man allegedly paid by Russian Federation to facilitate the foiled assassination, and the thwarted gunman himself.

As a result of the brilliant operation conducted by Ukrainian law enforcement officers, the killer who received the order for the murder of Arkady and the organiser of the murder has been detained. The Ukrainian man also was supposed to procure large quantities of weapons and explosives, including 300 AK-47 rifles and "hundreds of kilos of explosives", to perpetrate acts of terror in Ukraine, he said.

"I was told a month ago".

Original reports claimed Babchenko, a BBC News and Guardian contributor who was openly critical of Russia's relationship with Ukraine, had been shot to death in Kiev.

Babchenko, a Kremlin critic, left Russian Federation past year after criticizing the Moscow government.

A number of Kremlin critics have been killed in Ukraine in recent years, with one gunned down on a Kiev street in broad daylight and another whose vehicle exploded. In December 2016, Babchenko had written a Facebook post - about the Kremlin's actions in Aleppo, Syria - which was deemed "insufficiently patriotic" by authorities.

Babchenko did not take the intimidation too seriously, Ponomarev said Wednesday before the fact that the slaying was staged came out.

Several Russian lawmakers said at the time that Babchenko should be stripped of his citizenship over the comment, and Russian state media called him a traitor.

Just hours before the shooting was reported, Babchenko wrote on Facebook that he considered the day a "second birthday" because it was the fourth anniversary of his missing a flight on a Ukrainian military helicopter that later was shot down in the conflict between Ukraine and Moscow-backed separatists in the eastern part of the country. 14 people died, but I got lucky.
