  • Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko attends an interview in Kiev Ukraine

Russia's Foreign Ministry, which had earlier denied any involvement in Babchenko's death, said it was pleased to hear that he was actually alive, accusing Ukraine of "propaganda".

The Associated Press reports Arkady Babchenko attended the event in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev, where the head of the Ukrainian Security Service, Vasily Gritsak, revealed that the agency faked Babchenko's death in an effort to find the individuals who were trying to kill him.

An unidentified gunman shot dead a prominent Russian journalist in Ukraine on Tuesday, likely for his professional activities, the Kiev police said.

Ukrainian authorities have said they think Babchenko was killed because of his work.

The 41-year-old Babchenko served in the Russian army during the first separatist war in Chechnya during the 1990s and later became a journalist.

The journalist left Russian Federation in February 2017 after he claimed he had been receiving threats and shared concerns he might be jailed. Babchenko was a well-known war correspondent and openly supportive of Ukraine. Ukrainian prosecutors alleged that Voronenkov, who had toed the Kremlin line while serving as a Russian lawmaker but turned into a Kremlin critic after his 2016 move to Ukraine, was killed on orders from a Russian crime lord.

Ukrainian police circulated the Babchenko killer's suspect sketch showing 40-45 y.o. man with grey beard.

At the event, he also shared his fears prior to leaving Russian Federation, comments that would prove to be eerily prescient given Tuesday's shooting outside his home: "For years I thought I'd be arrested", Babchenko said then.

Multiple Ukrainian officials originally blamed Babchenko's death on Vladimir Putin because he has been criticizing the Kremlin's policies for years.
