When he canceled the summit, Trump said his administration's "maximum pressure campaign" of sanctions against North Korea "will continue as it has been continuing".

Nauert provided no further details.

US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim is seen in a file photo. Negotiations over logistics and other issues related to the possible summit meeting are expected to begin Tuesday.

Former CIA Director Michael Hayden said he is unsure President Trump has "done the homework needed" for negotiations with North Korea over its nuclear program.

The White House said Trump and Abe spoke Monday.

President Moon Jae-in sat with Kim in a surprise meeting Saturday in the border village of Panmunjom and said the North Korean leader has agreed to the need for denuclearization of the peninsula and to the talks with Trump.

According to reporting from NPR's Elise Hu, the Saturday meeting between the leaders of the two Koreas happened on Kim's request.

He said he was in Singapore to wish success for the summit between Trump and Kim to negotiate an end to Pyongyang's nuclear programme.

"The Chinese said publicly, 'you're not going to get a trade deal, Mr. Trump, unless you give us sanction relief on ZTE, '" Chang told Vittert.

Pyongyang, which cancelled the talks earlier this month in a sign of reemerging tensions, said the two leaders agreed to "meet frequently in the future". "What's unclear for Chairman Kim, in my opinion, is not his willingness for denuclearization but whether he can certainly trust the US saying that it'll end hostile relations and guarantee the security of his regime after his denuclearization".

US President Donald Trump is yet to confirm on the summit.

5 dead, 30 missing from powerful cyclone
PACA had announced the closure of Salalah International Airport on Friday for 24 hours can be extended, as a result of Mekunu. They laughed and shared plates by flashlight in a darkened ballroom, the cyclone's wind a boring roar behind their clatter.

Since then, North Korea has rejected U.S. demands for it to unilaterally abandon its nuclear weapons program that experts say could threaten the United States.

The White House said a "pre-advance" team was travelling to Singapore to meet with North Koreans.

Officials described a high-stakes scramble, with an uncertain ending, as Trump presses his advisers to move ahead with the goal of meeting on June 12, despite concerns among top national security staff there isn't enough time to prepare.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in may possibly be joining the two leaders at the summit. More meetings are reported to be scheduled for today. Since taking power previous year, Moon has sought to facilitate dialogue between Trump and Kim to avoid the possibility of a devastating military conflict on the Korean Peninsula.

"We get that done and we can be successful in the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, that would be a great thing for North Korea, it would be a great thing for South Korea, it would be great for Japan, it would be great for the world, it would be great for the United States, it would be great for China". But experts are hardly optimistic about a breakthrough, even if the meeting goes ahead.

Seoul blames him for masterminding the 2010 sinking of the South Korean navy corvette the Cheonan, which killed 46 sailors, an attack North Korea denies playing any role in.

The U.S. has frequently called for the "complete, verifiable, and irreversible" dismantlement of North Korea's nuclear weapons program.

USA officials have talked about a comprehensive one-shot deal in which North Korea eliminates its nukes first and receives rewards later.

"During the South Korea-U.S. summit, President Trump said the U.S.is willing to clearly put an end to hostile relations (between the U.S. and North Korea) and help (the North) achieve economic prosperity if North Korea conducts denuclearization", he said.

"If the summit is going to happen, I'm going to guarantee it won't just be me".

Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party Central Committee, watches the closing ceremony. "But he wants to give off this perception that he's this open leader, that he's peaceful, that he's reasonable".
