Subtropical Storm Alberto heads to southern states

  • Subtropical Storm Alberto continues to churn north through the Gulf of Mexico

Florida, Alabama and MS declared states of emergency on Saturday with up to 15 inches (38 cm) of rain forecast over the Memorial Day weekend, as well as tidal surges and damaging winds, according to Patrick Burke of the weather service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

Florida Governor Rick Scott issued the declaration for all 67 counties in his state. Only.13 inches had fallen at the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport through 5 p.m. Saturday, but almost 6 inches has fallen so far this month, about three times the normal amount. Its expected to turn north Sunday morning, then north-northwest Monday night, moving at 13 miles per hour.

Parts of Florida, Georgia and Alabama could get from four to eight inches (10 to 20 centimetres) with some areas getting more than a foot of rain.

"There is the risk that Alberto stalls near the coast on Monday and struggles to move inland", said AccuWeather Meteorologist Evan Duffey. This will take place as Alberto nears landfall between the Alabama and Western Florida panhandle coasts. Gradual strengthening is forecast until the system reaches the northern Gulf Coast. Storms will likely produce areas of heavy rain and tropical downpours.

There also was a storm surge watch from Horseshoe Beach, Fla., west to the mouth of the Mississippi River. Like residents in Sarasota and Manatee counties, people in Gulfport, Mississippi, lined up to fill sandbags.

"On the forecast track, the center of Alberto will move over the northern Gulf of Mexico tonight and cross the northern Gulf Coast in the warning area on Monday", the center said.

Officers later escorted Weinstein from the police station to a courtroom, where he entered wearing handcuffs for arraignment. He will reportedly face criminal charges of rape and criminal sexual act.

At 5am EDT Saturday morning, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Alberto was moving north-northeastward toward the Yucatan Channel and was centered about 95 miles (105 kilometers) southeast of Cozumel, Mexico.

Authorities say conditions are especially risky with flooding rains coming overnight and on a holiday weekend when many people have outdoor plans.

Our weather today will have periods of rain, some will be heavy at times.

But the 2018 season is off to an early start with Tropical Storm Alberto being the first named storm.

Tropical-storm force winds will be possible in western Cuba and in the Gulf coast area where warnings are posted.

For the actual Memorial Day holiday, we expect only a few scattered showers and storms to develop during the midday and afternoon hours, especially near and east of I-81.
