Upset over Russian Federation probe, Trump tears into 'spygate'

"As the White House's attorney handling the special counsel's investigation, his [Flood's] involvement - in any capacity - was entirely improper", the Democrats said in their statement.

The mere existence of a government informant in an investigation doesn't mean a probe is tainted.

A forthcoming report from the Inspector General's office reportedly contains evidence that senior FBI officials used the resources of the federal agency to infiltrate the 2016 Trump presidential campaign.

Cornyn, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, said Wednesday evening that they had not yet received a response.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., defended the House Intelligence Committee's requests for records from the DOJ about the Russian Federation investigation, following several weeks of a contentious back-and-forth between House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., and DOJ officials.

There's no telling what kind of information was actually discussed in those meetings, but we do know that Democrat, Adam Schiff, the only Democrat allowed to go to that meeting, did come out and say there was absolutely nothing to confirm Trump's claims that there was a spy within his campaign.

"We now call it 'Spygate.' You're calling it 'Spygate, '" Trump beamed inaccurately, on the South Lawn. After Democrats complained about being excluded, Ryan and Schiff were invited.

"Look how things have turned around on the Criminal Deep State".

"I have a lot of concerns about that", Representative Jerrold Nadler of NY said of the possibility that a lawmaker may have given such information to Trump through back channels.

There is no evidence to suggest that the source was inserted into the Trump campaign, as the president has suggested, but the source did seek out and meet Trump campaign advisers.

Trump's official explanation for firing Comey invoked a memo from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein accusing the FBI director of misconduct in the 2016 investigation of Hillary Clinton's private email server use.

Comey, a former Republican who now identifies as an independent, warned the GOP: "Attacks on the Federal Bureau of Investigation and lying about its work will do lasting damage to our country".

Getting back to the South Lawn Q&A, another reporter said former FBI Director James Comey has taken issue with Trump's morning Twitter output.

Over the weekend, the president demanded the Department of Justice to start an investigation into the matter.

They spoke "to relay the president's desire for as much openness as possible under the law", White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement. Trump has routinely broken norms about how the White House interacts with the Justice Department, which is supposed to have a degree of independence.

Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, a noted critic of the president, said earlier this week that any type of spy or informant on the campaign was there to monitor possible Russian activities, not to gather political information. "How will Republicans explain this to their grandchildren?".

CNN's Kaitlan Collins reports Sanders said Flood "will be joining the White House staff to represent the president and the administration against the Russian Federation witch hunt".

He previously had said that a decision would not be made about an interview until after Trump's summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, a meeting that the president canceled on Thursday but the White House is open to reviving.
