Extending a helping hand to the family of nurse Lini Puthussery, who died after contracting Nipah from her patients, the Kerala government on Wednesday chose to give a government job to her husband and Rs 10 lakh each to two of their children. She is not quarantined in a private hospital in Mangaluru and samples have been sent to the diagnostic centre in Pune.

Around 15 bats were found dead in a government school in Nahan, reported ANI.

A nurse who treated three of the Kerala victims succumbed to the infection on Monday, Health Minister K.K. Shailaja told a news briefing, where she announced payment of compensation to her family and others who lost family members to the infection. In Karnataka, health officials have been put on alert. It said that a detailed advisory, with preventive measures and common signs, would be issued soon.

Human-to-human transmission of the virus has been recorded in previous outbreaks in India that killed as many as 50 people.

Nipah has killed more than 260 people in Malaysia, Bangladesh and India since 1998 and has a mortality rate of almost 70 percent, according to the World Health Organization.
