The eastern-most channel split, creating three ocean entries Wednesday.

The preparations came as a third lava flow from Kilauea streamed into the ocean on Thursday. Her recent article is titled "Workers Scramble to Seal Wells at Geothermal Plant Threatened by Lava".

The movement of that river of the lava means there is only one ground evacuation route available for an estimated 1,000 residents who are still in homes scattered across thousands of acres of rural land in the Kalapana area, including Opihikao, Black Sand Beach subdivision, Kalapana Seaview Estates, Puna Beach Palisades and Kahena.

As anxious residents scour the internet for the latest information on the Kilauea eruptions, authorities have also been dealing with a slew of misconceptions and rumors circulating on social media.

The volcano's 4,090 ft (1,250 metre) summit has collapsed to form a caldera, a broad shallow depression almost 3 miles long and 2 miles wide with an area of more than 4 square miles. And right now, it's all a lava lake. On Wednesday, the volcano belched a plume that reached about 7,000 feet (2,133 metres), scientists said.

Residents in the Leilani Estates community have seen their neighborhood transformed by the lava.

The occurrence of new lava vents, now numbering about two dozen, have been accompanied by earthquakes and periodic eruptions from the summit crater.

Geologists are describing Kilauea is one of the biggest volcanic events in a century.

One potential hazard that appeared to have been brought under control was at the Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) plant, which provides about a quarter of the Big Island's electricity.

Puna covers as much ground as Los Angeles, but its population is much smaller, hovering around 45,000 people. And while the unemployment rate is low at around 2 percent, that figure obscures other problems. The eruption has destroyed 50 buildings, including almost two dozen homes.

Gov. David Ige said the volcanic eruption and its aftermath have spread fear and uncertainty.

Another explosion was reported late Tuesday from the summit, sending ash 9,000 feet into the air. The larger explosions produce ash that is blown downwind, and trace amounts have fallen in nearby communities.

One person has suffered a serious leg injury from flying lava spatter.

Utility crews racing to quench the wells with cold water and plug them with mud had managed to mostly secure the site. Historic reports and geologic remnants suggest the locals were overwhelmed by a pyroclastic blast - a surging mass of gas and volcanic rock.
