  • Harvey Weinstein Turns Himself in to Police to Face Sex Crime Charge in NYC

Update, at 8:30 a.m. the NYPD released this statement: "Today, at the NYPD's 1st Precinct, Harvey Weinstein was arrested, processed and charged with Rape, Criminal Sex Act, Sex Abuse and Sexual Misconduct for incidents involving two separate women".

London's Metropolitan Police have also said they are investigating an allegation of sexual assault against Weinstein, while prosecutors in Los Angeles said in February they were reviewing three accusations of sexual assault against him.

According to the complaint, Weinstein was with a woman in downtown Manhattan at some point in the summer of 2004 (the complaint says "between June and September"). Neither victim was named.

The New York police said in its statement: "The NYPD thanks these courageous survivors for their courage to come forward and seek justice". He has been charged with first-degree rape and third-degree rape in one case and first-degree criminal sex act in another; he has since posted $1 million bail and agreed to wear a monitoring device.

More than 70 women have accused the co-founder of the Miramax film studio and the Weinstein Co of sexual misconduct, including rape, with some allegations dating back decades.

The New York charges mark the second high-profile prosecution of a once-powerful show business personality in the #MeToo era.

He will reportedly face criminal charges of rape and criminal sexual act.

After sexual assault charges were dropped against former International Monetary Fund Chairman Dominique Strauss-Kahn in 2011, his lawyer Ben Brafman assailed the accuser's credibility, telling Reuters: "This encounter was quick, it was consensual and she was a willing participant". Other accusers may be brought to court to establish a pattern of predatory behaviour, and if the recent trial against Bill Cosby is any proof, sexual offenders are no longer safe within their elite clique of enablers and apologists.

Actress Asia Argento, who accused Weinstein of raping her, tweeted Friday, "Today Harvey Weinstein will take his first step on his inevitable descent to hell".

Officers later escorted Weinstein from the police station to a courtroom, where he entered wearing handcuffs for arraignment. As he left his auto and entered a throng of flashing camera lights, the former movie mogul clutched three books under his arm, like a shield.

Disgraced Hollywood powerbroker Harvey Weinstein was arrested and charged on Friday with rape and sex crimes on two women, almost eight months after his career imploded in a blaze of assault accusations that triggered the global #MeToo movement.

She told The New Yorker in a story published in October that Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex during a daytime meeting at his New York office in 2004, the summer before her senior year at Middlebury College.

Weinstein turned himself in to police in NY on criminal charges including rape and sexual misconduct based on allegations from two women.

NY police previously confirmed another credible rape allegation after "Boardwalk Empire" actress Paz de la Huerta accused the former producer of raping her twice at her NY apartment in late 2010.

"They couldn't get a conviction", he said. Brafman says Weinstein vehemently denies the charges and will fight to get them dismissed.

"I haven't come out of the shock of it yet", she said.

Time's Up, a movement founded by Hollywood celebrities that aims to hold abusers accountable also took to social media with a statement saying they looked forward to seeing 'justice prevail'. He has denied all allegations of nonconsensual sex.

"There was a part of me that was terribly naive", Georgina Chapman, his estranged wife and mother of two, told Vogue magazine recently.
