Evert blasts French Open after refusing to seed Serena

Sloane Stephens has never enjoyed much success at the French Open but that could soon change when the American baseliner struts into Roland Garros this year for the first time as a grand slam champion. If Williams enters unseeded, she could end up facing some of the top ranked players in the early rounds which makes it a lot more hard for her to advance and book herself a place in the quarter or semi-finals.

Williams, a three-time champion at the French Open, now has a tougher road to the final because there's a higher chance she'll have to play some of the game's best players early in the tournament.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova insisted today that the French Open was right not to hand Serena Williams a special seeding for the event.

"Historically, WTA players have not been supportive of the use of special rankings for seeding purposes", the WTA said in a statement to The Associated Press.

As a result the 23-time major winner's ranking has crashed to 453 in the world and she needed to use her protected ranking to enter the draw at Roland Garros.

Laurel Or Yanny? 'I Hear Covfefe' Trump Jokes In White House Video
If you hadn't been introduced to the possibility of hearing "Yanny" or "Laurel" you may not have heard either of these words. We've already had this discussion in the KOLR10 newsroom where people passionately debate if they hear Yanny or Laurel .

Several of Williams' rivals were critical of the rule that doesn't protect a ranking when a player takes maternity leave.

"It's such an incredible effort for a woman to come back from physically, emotionally", Sharapova said, adding: "There's just another whole dimension to the travel, to the experiences, to the emotions to the physicality of every single day". With Roger Federer and Andy Murray not playing at the French Open, which starts on Sunday, Nadal is the short-odds favourite to win a tournament where his overall record stands at an astonishing 79 wins and just two losses. She won her first match in 14 months when she beat Zarina Diyas 7-5, 6-3 in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open on March 8 in Indian Wells, Calif. She is ranked 453rd this week.

"If a woman takes 12 months maternity leave in a workplace, the law allows her to return to the same position", she said. She was not seeded at either tournament. She may not like it, but she will go with it and prove what she wants to prove in the process.

Williams may not be getting treated like a top player by tournament organizers, but as she wryly noted Monday on Twitter, other tennis-related officials still seem to be recognizing her elite status. Another familiar face back in the draw: Victoria Azarenka, who gave birth to a son a year ago.

"Proud to participate to keep the sport clean", she said. But I feel like I always had a chance, and they kind of slip away, all the matches somehow, so even if it's a little bit disappointing, I feel like I was there and I had my chances.
