  • BS Yeddyurappa One Day Chief Minister Says Congress In Jibe At Karnataka Swearing-In

Amid the high political drama, the Supreme Court, today will resume its hearing on Congress' plea regarding Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala's decision to invite the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to form a government in Karnataka.

The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered a floor test in the Karnataka Assembly at 4 pm on Saturday, reducing the 15-day window given by the Governor to BJP Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa to prove majority. "We expect the BJP to convince the necessary number of legislators to switch sides and allow the BJP to prove its majority in the next 15 days", he said.

Within hours of taking oath, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said he would soon waive off crop loans of farmers across the state.

The BJP has 104 lawmakers, eight short of a simple majority, while the Congress won 78 seats and its ally Janata Dal (Secular) has 37 members. The JD (S) and the Congress had moved the Supreme Court after governor Vajubhai Vala invited the BJP to form the government first, seeking a stay on the swearing-in, calling it unconstitutional. After Yeddyurappa sworn in as CM yesterday, Congress & JDS tried to unite their MLAs and shifted them out of Bangalore's Eagleton Resort, where they are holding up ever since the Karnataka got the hung assembly mandate.

"Let the House decide and the best course would be floor test", a three-judge bench headed by Justice AK Sikri said.

He said he could not reveal their names in court but was confident that they would have the majority if there was a floor test.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had met JD (S) chief and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda at the latter's residence before the Karnataka polls.

The Congress alleged that the way the Governor invited the BJP, with 104 seats, to form the government was done in an "unconstitutional manner" when their alliance with HD Kumaraswamy-led JD (S) crossed the required mark at 116 seats.

One opinion is that the petition has in effect been rendered infructuous despite the next date of hearing given on Friday at 10.30 a.m.

The Congress and the JD (S) had joined hands after the election and staked claim to form the government.

The election to one seat was countermanded after the death of a candidate. "In case he is given oath in the meantime, that shall be subject to further orders of this court and final outcome of the writ petition (by the Congress and JD-S)", said the three-judge bench, recording the proceedings of the night in the packed Room No. 6. The Supreme Court, which was closed, was opened past midnight and the hearing was held in court hall number 6 from 2 am to 5.30 am on Thursday.

Fearing poaching of their legislators by the BJP, the Congress and the JD (S) had earlier made a decision to fly them from out of Karnataka.
