Perk those ears! What do you hear

You may have already had this argument with your co-workers, when you heard a brief audio clip of a computerized voice that sounds like it's saying either, "laurel" or "yanny".

"I hear a Laurel", one person said. He claims if the pitch is shifted, to hear more of either the higher or lower frequencies, people should be able to hear both words. "All of those play into whether you hear Yanny or Laurel".

"I literally just turned all frequencies below 1khz to negative 70 decibels and I still hear 'laurel, '" someone said on Reddit.

Yanny or Laurel? Laurel or Yanny? You'll hear that all-too-familiar sound.

So while the audio clip was made for the word laurel, it would appear Team Yanny has the better hearing. The Times reports that the viral sensation can be traced back to 18-year-old high school student Roland Szabo of Lawrenceville, Georgia, who recorded the clip and shared it on Reddit after others in the same school as him disagreed about the sound they were hearing.

What's causing 10,000,000 people to hear such different sounds? She said she heard laurel.

Some say it's "laurel; others say it's "yanny".

"Over time with the wear and tear process that comes with aging, exposure to loud noises, we tend to lose those hair cells in the high pitch range first", says Wolfe. And why is social media up in arms? "I think maybe it creates something our brains aren't used to and so we interpret it differently", said Marino.

Some people believe it's the difference in quality and the device you hear the sound on. The different things we hear reminds us that our world, and ourselves, are far more unknown than we think. Couple this with all the cultural and linguistic ways we've been trained to hear certain vowels, and you've got a ideal recipe for a little audio illusion.
