The former TV lighting director, who lives in Mexico, has been scheduled in for heart surgery following a heart attack last week, according to TMZ. The statement did not confirm or deny speculation surrounding his attendance.

Britain's Prince Harry and his USA fiancee Meghan Markle have chosen George and Charlotte, the children of the royal's elder brother Prince William, to be among the bridesmaids and page boys for their wedding, his office said on Wednesday.

"Normally it would go to the next male in line in her family, but I understand her brother is not coming", says Marie Claire's royal expert, Caroline Castigliano, who calls it "a very hard situation".

He said he went to hospital on Monday complaining of chest pains and was put through a host of tests that found his heart had suffered "significant damage".

"I hate the idea of missing one of the greatest moments in history and walking my daughter down the aisle", he was quoted as telling the online gossip portal ahead of Saturday's ceremony at Windsor Castle. "This is a historic moment", he told TMZ Tuesday.

He added: "Of course I'd walk her down the aisle".

It was not immediately possible to reach Thomas Markle for comment and it's not clear if he may change his plans again in the next few days.

Morton, who has also written a biography of Markle entitled "Hollywood Princess", was speaking at a literary lunch for The Oldie magazine on Tuesday.

Kensington Palace has neither confirmed or denied whether Mr Markle will attend, but has appealed for understanding.

"He's long talked about how much [Prince Charles] would have loved a daughter and this would give him the opportunity to walk this handsome lady down the aisle to his waiting son".

The palace has already announced that Ms Markle is not having a maid of honour because she did not want to choose just one person from her close-knit group of friends. Officials also said that on the day of the wedding, Markle's mother would accompany her in a auto ride to Windsor Castle and that Markle's father would walk his daughter down the aisle at St. George's Chapel.

Thomas Markle has been the subject of many unflattering media reports in the British tabloids as his daughter Meghan prepares to marry Prince Harry on Saturday.

In Sunday editions and online, Britain's Daily Mail published what it said was security camera footage showing Thomas Markle arriving at the internet cafe with a photographer.

"I think it's quite awful", she said.

Later in the day, Thomas Markle told TMZ he staged the photos in an effort to rebrand his image and admits the posed pictures look "stupid and hammy". The news website also claimed that he had recently suffered a heart attack.

He had come forward on Monday and said he wasn't going to be a part of Markle and Prince Harry's nuptials because he didn't want to embarrass her following the paparazzi photo controversy.

Markle's gaffe-prone American family has been sending royal courtiers into something of a spin by airing its dirty laundry in public.
