Local law enforcement officers attend National Police Week in Washington DC

After almost two decades of planning, fundraising and construction, the National Law Enforcement Museum will open in October in Washington, D.C., officials said Wednesday.

The special ceremony will pay tribute to Carothers and the 53 other officers who made the ultimate sacrifice for our community.

Wednesday's ceremony began with a 65 vehicle procession from Runkle Lake Park to Forest Park school.

This annual event is known for its' solemnity, as many families of police officers killed in the line of duty attend. "It gives the communities the opportunity to realize that officers do make sacrifices daily".

The service was punctuated with a moment of silence, that followed a reading of the names of 20 fallen officers-the earliest of which dates back to 1861.

"It is important our organization has a presence during National Police Week so we can show support for our law enforcement officials while also seeking support for our goals for the 2018 election", said Daniel D. Stuebs, APOA Political Director. "I wanted to thank them for that".

The museum will house more than 21,000 artifacts from every era of American law enforcement, and there are plans for interactive exhibits, according to a news release from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
