  • Dick Cheney wants to bring back waterboarding because 'it worked'

The top Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee says he will vote to confirm Gina Haspel to be the next CIA director. Sen.

Kennedy claimed waterboarding is uncomfortable but not torture. But by the time he released the statement, two key swing votes on the committee, Manchin and GOP moderate Senator Susan Collins of ME, had already announced they would vote for Haspel.

But opponents of Haspel's nomination lament that McCain's fellow Republicans are paying little heed to the Navy veteran's warnings about Haspel.

Sen. John Hoeven has said he supports Haspel's nomination. But critics have said she should have been more forceful in denouncing torture and Mr. Paul has said she had not come fully clean on her role in the agency's harsh interrogation and secret prison programs in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.

Mark Warner of Virginia, Haspel said one of the "hard lessons since 9/11" was the costs of the agency's use of torture, which she called "enhanced interrogation". 11, 2001 strategy, said last week if it were up to him, "I'd do it again". "She will be seen not only as a strong leader if she's approved, but she will be seen as somebody who understands the work of the agency". Her written comments went farther than ones she made at her confirmation hearing.

"The United States must send a message to the world that we hold ourselves to a higher standard than our enemies". "I don't think it's knowable whether interrogation techniques played a role in that".

The paper referenced Ms. Haspel's most controversial work - overseeing a Central Intelligence Agency secret prison in Thailand in 2002 where harsh interrogations, including waterboarding, were conducted and videotaped. The statement appeared to be aimed at skeptical senators who asked Haspel whether she would restart the program if ordered to do so by Trump.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney stood by the CIA's controversial torture program and said interrogation techniques like waterboarding should still be in place. Rodriguez has said publicly that Haspel knew he meant to take the matter into his own hands and issue the order, because he believed he had the authority to do so.
