New York School Districts Brace for Budget Votes

According to the district website, highlights of the budget include the hiring of 12 new positions (Reading teacher, high school teacher, three special education teachers, two assistant principals, one teaching assistant, two teacher aids, one adaptive physical education teacher, and one security staffer), additional BOCES services, and the continuation of a Parent Engagement Initiative and a Community Involvement program.

The district is in contract to purchase the property at 50 Narrow Lane, near the high school, for almost $2.3 million from John Pace Jr. and Donna Marie Pace.

Statewide, school taxes are proposed to increase by about $515 million for the 2018-19 school year. Last year a final agreement wasn't reached until after the school year had started.

In New Rochelle, the budget will need at least 60 percent of voters to approve the spending plan in order to pass. The candidates are: Melinda Leising, Donna Durr Arancio and Samuel Catterson.

But, this time it is Muskegon Public Schools that must find a way to deal with a budget shortfall threatening the district's stability.

Monday's meeting will be at 7 p.m.in the district administration building.

Strauch-Nelson said the district "values the importance of being open and transparent with board members as well as the general public and takes seriously its responsibility under open meetings and open records laws, and again, the board can certainly clarify this language".

Voters in some other districts will also weigh in on various propositions. "The school board might be within its rights to make requesters of large requests pay a fee for records even if they serve on the school board".

Bridgehampton voting hours are from 2 to 8 p.m.at the school.

Polls were open Tuesday in many school districts across Long Island for residents to vote on proposed budgets totaling almost $13 billion, along with contested board races featuring 207 candidates in 56 districts. "There are issues that have to be addressed" along with things the board and district can not control, including enrollment, he said.
