Woods, a two-time Players victor, started the day a whopping 14 shots back of overnight leader Webb Simpson (15 under).

Woods nearly missed his opportunity to make a charge. "It was nice. I made some putts today, and that was basically the difference".

The picture-perfect ball striking continued during the opening holes of the back-nine, as Woods hit a soaring 3-iron that set up an eagle attempt on the par-5 11.

The 17th stole his chance at the course record, but he will still enter the weekend with a sizable lead. He striped a driver off the first tee then stuck a sand wedge to 15 feet below the hole, and hit a lovely right-to-left putt that fell right into the center of the hole.

"I was actually contemplating putting it, but even if I putted it I might not have got within six or seven feet, I just wanted to try to leave myself a putt, but that checked into the hill quite nicely".

"I felt free. I came out feeling good and playing aggressively", said the American.

New Zealand's Danny Lee is up with the leaders at The Players Championship in Florida after an impressive fightback in the second round.

"I hit a lot of good shots today", Woods said. He blasted to 8 feet but couldn't convert.

Trump once showed an interest in holding the summit in Panmunjom, where a summit of the South and North Korean leaders was held. When asked if he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize, Trump laughed and replied, "Everyone thinks so, but I would never say it".

On a day when the course was scorable, with temperatures over 90 degrees seeing the ball travel further and land on softer than usual greens, McIlroy was lost in the haze.

On Johnson, Bale added: "I really love watching Dustin Johnson play".

Hughes, 27, said he grew up watching and idolizing Woods, and it was a thrill to be paired with him. "We were like, 'Man, I hope he shoots 59.' And at the same time, we're saying if he shoots 59, can you imagine how hard the setup is going to be tomorrow?"

Spieth did his damage on the back nine, playing it in 31 strokes, including birdies at the final three holes. Spieth had missed the cut in his previous three Players Championships and has struggled to get much going this year, especially on the greens. I blocked it a little bit and probably should have hit one more club, but other than that a great confidence builder for me.

"I didn't quite swing it right today", he told reporters. "You have to just take what it gives you, and take you medicine when you get out of position".

Ryan Moore hit 13 of 18 greens in regulation during his third round at the THE PLAYERS Championship, finishing at 2 under for the tournament.
