Scientist, 104, who 'regrets' his long life dies as Swiss euthanasia clinic

Speaking on Thursday in the room where he later died, Mr Goodall said: "My life has been rather poor for the a year ago or so".

He departed from this world with theatrics by his side.

A noted ecologist and botanist, 104-year-old David Goodall reportedly took his final breaths as the song he chose, Beethoven's "Ode to Joy", came to a close. The words are sung during the final movement by four vocal soloists and a chorus. "We can't function as a society if we allow euthanasia". He secured a fast-track appointment with assisted dying foundation Eternal Spirit in Basel.

"He wishes to have no funeral, no remembrance service or ceremony", the group said in a statement. "I'm sorry to have to go a long way away in order to end my life".

Goodall wanted his decision to send a message to legislators who he hopes will one day legalize assisted suicide in places like Australia.

At a press conference in Basel on Wednesday, he told reporters that he was happy to have the chance to end his life in Switzerland but would have preferred to do so back home.

"I'm content to leave them undone", he added. Now seven states (and Washington, D.C.) have laws allowing assisted suicide for terminally ill, mentally competent adults - Hawaii, Oregon, Vermont, Montana, Washington, Colorado and California.

Walmart announces seven-day limit on opioids
On May 7, Walmart and Sam's Club announced plans to restrict acute opioid prescriptions to a seven-day supply. Several other companies have also been making similar efforts to help mitigate the opioid epidemic.

Goodall arrived in Switzerland on May 7, after visiting relatives in the French city of Bordeaux.

Conformists and non-conformists have always been in a tug of war as critics warned his decision exclusively on the grounds of old age set a "dangerous precedent".

He was born in the U.K.in April 1914, just before the outbreak of World War I, and moved from London to Australia as a child.

Earlier this week, Goodall said he resented having to travel so far to carry out his plan, but was relieved the end was near. He played tennis until he was 90, he performed in amateur stage plays until his eyesight began to decline, and he kept up his work as an honorary research assistant at Edith Cowan University in Perth, even after the school in 2016 deemed him unfit to continue making the trek to campus, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

"At my age, I get right up in the morning".

"It would have been much more convenient for everyone if I had been able to, but unfortunately it failed", he said of the suicide attempt. I was a bit sorry to say goodbye to my family in Bordeaux but that's the way it was.
