Israel strikes 'almost all' Iranian infrastructure sites in Syria

  • Netanyahu No basis to think Russia will limit Israel’s action in Syria

British Prime Minister Theresa May struck the same note against Iran, saying in a statement that Israel has "every right to defend itself". "The US supports them and will support any action aimed at self-defense".

Early Thursday, Iran fired about 20 rockets at Israeli positions in Golan Heights, according to the Israeli military.

The Russian MoD maintained that Syria's air defence system shot down more than half of the incoming missiles, with the damage being evaluated. One TV station, Beirut-based Al-Mayadeen, said at least 50 missiles were fired from Syria at Israeli forces in the Golan Heights.

Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said the rockets, which were targeted at front-line Israeli military positions in the Golan Heights, were all either downed by aerial defense systems or fell short and landed in Syria. Israel says its occasional strikes in Syria aim to prevent such an outcome.

"We are not looking to escalate the situation", Conricus said but warned Israel would respond forcefully if attacked.

"The global community should prevent the establishment of the Iranian Quds Force in Syria".

Iran is a Syrian ally, and its military has been supporting President Bashar al-Assad. The barrage of missiles killed three soldiers while injuring another two, the Syrian MoD said.

If confirmed, the incident would be the first time Iran has sought to directly attack Israeli-controlled territory, aside from an alleged attempted drone attack in February.

Speaking at the Herzliya Conference, an annual security gathering north of Tel Aviv, Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Israel would response fiercely to any further Iranian actions. Now we have a new height and I'm not sure it is a result of the nuclear issue, which is a very important issue, but a separate one from this.

During Syria's civil war, Israel has carried out more than 100 air strikes in Syria, targeting suspected weapons shipments by Iran to the Lebanese Hezbollah group. Yet until this point there had been no Iranian retaliation.

Russian Federation and Israel coordinate their actions within Syria for the goal of deconfliction.

Israel retaliated with what appeared to be surface-to-surface missiles, and Syrian anti-aircraft batteries hosed the sky with fire in an effort to intercept them. But it also emphasizes the diminishing United States influence in Syria - and the region in general.

Last month, an attack on Syria's T4 air base in Homs province killed seven Iranian military personnel.

The statement also called for other nations "to make clear that the Iranian regime's actions pose a severe threat to worldwide peace and stability". "We have seen a demonstration of the IDF's intelligence and airpower capabilities", he added about the retaliatory strikes, according to the Post.

The two sides have been on a collision course for months.
