Google is now showing a range of ads about the Irish referendum, which will take place on 25 May.

Google has announced that they will be banning all ads relating to the upcoming referendum on the Eighth Amendment.

.

"Following our update around election integrity efforts globally, we have chose to pause all ads related to the Irish referendum on the Eighth Amendment", a Google spokesperson announced.

"Our company approach is to build tools to increase transparency around political advertising so that people know who is paying for the ads they are seeing, and to ensure any organisation running a political ad is located in that country".

Despite this there have been repeated concerns about how the social network's paid advertising product has been used during the election campaign, prompting the Irish government to consider a new law forcing internet companies to reveal who is paying for online political adverts.

If lawmakers fail to elect a prime minister a second time, parliament will be dissolved and early elections will take place. He said his ministers will be chosen "as a result of discussions" with his allies and other political groups.

At a press conference in Dublin today, representatives from Save the 8th, the Pro Life Campaign and the Iona Institute accused the government, the media and the Yes side of orchestrating the Google ban to scupper the No side's chances.

The vote is due to take place in a little over two weeks time.

Google is suspending adverts related to a referendum in Ireland on whether or not to overturn a constitutional clause banning abortion.

Independent News & Media, Ireland's largest digital media platform, says that it will allow digital ads from both campaigns provided that they are "factual" and are "not offensive". Google's ads appear on millions of websites, including its video-sharing platform YouTube. Avi Kelin, an associate at Genova Burns, also said that Facebook and other social media platforms have no legal obligation to remove or ban foreign political ads that don't explicitly endorse one side.

But The National Review's Michael Brendan Dougherty suggests the tech giants are bowing to pressure from abortion advocates in Ireland.
