Iran nuke deal on table as UK's Johnson heads to Washington

  • Iran nuclear deal: Boris Johnson visits US for talks

When the deal was signed in 2015 during the administration of former US President Barack Obama, the Israeli leader faced opposition to his stance at the White House.

The statement also emphasized the importance for all parties to the deal to thoroughly adhere to and fully implement their commitments under the nuclear accord.

Trump can do that without announcing that he is withdrawing from the deal.

At the same time, the European strategy appears to be to try to manage Trump - possibly with some sort of additional measures - while also coaxing Iran to stay in the nuclear deal as long as possible, perhaps until after 2020 when the US may have a new president.

Ending or blocking sanctions relief is a flagrant violation of the JCPOA which is predicated on Iran's curbing its nuclear programme in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Monday the United States would regret a decision to leave Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers and Tehran would fiercely resist U.S. pressure to limit its influence in the Middle East.

While the May 12 deadline has been portrayed as a yes-or-no decision for Trump, it's not that simple.

Trump could still figure out a way to stay in the deal between the Islamic Republic and the six world powers: Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States.

Macron, Rouhani agree to work together to preserve 2015 Iran nuclear deal
The sapling was a gift from French President Emmanuel Macron for his state visit with US President Donald Trump last week. Australian ABC News tweeted: "Lost in translation: Emmanuel Macron thanks the PM's "delicious wife".

Restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities begin expiring in 2025.

Writing in the New York Times, Johnson described the deal as a means to "counter Tehran's aggressive regional behaviour" and urged Trump to "improve the handcuffs" on Iran "rather than break them". These include Iran's ballistic missile programme and its involvement in Iraq and Syria.

Once such a framework is in place, Congress should modify the legislation that now requires Trump to waive sanctions every few months (avoiding future crises over the deal), while incorporating some of the approaches agreed upon with the Europeans, to reinforce the message to Iran.

Darroch also said that Trump and British Prime Minister Theresa May spoke Saturday about the Iran deal and that the president said "a final decision hasn't yet been taken".

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's government says the "bullying" his country.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said the deal, which is being policed by United Nations nuclear inspectors, "makes the world safer", and would do everything possible to uphold it. What happens after the USA pulls out?

It's possible that Trump could waive sanctions again, to give diplomats a few more months to "fix" the deal.

In an attempt to salvage the deal, French President Emmanuel Macron has recently pushed to extend its scope to address this issue, as well as the absence of any limits on Iran's conventional missile capabilities and Tehran's role in the region. He also seems to be hopeful that the threat of military action, either US or Israeli, will deter Iran from resuming its nuclear activities.
