The mercury could hit 28C as people round off their three-day weekend - making it the hottest in almost two decades.

"If we see things really warm up it's likely to mean millions more cars on the road, which is bound to cause queues on popular routes".

"Some of these warm to hot periods could become hampered by cloud cover at times giving a muggy feel to affairs and broken up by some thunderstorm activity".

"The average for this time of years is about 16, so we are about 10 degrees above average right now".

Cooler and wetter weather is expected in July before a possibly record-breaking heatwave in August.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Chris Bulmer said: 'We can't promise wall to wall sunshine for everyone this Bank Holiday weekend.

Scotland wasn't the only part of the United Kingdom to benefit from blue skies, with temperatures reaching 20.8C in Katesbridge, Northern Ireland, 23.6C at Powys in Wales and 25.6C in London. "28C is likely, and we could nudge closer to 29C".

The average daytime high for the month of May is around 17C.

The record for a May Bank Holiday is 28.6C in 1995.

For the rest of bank holiday Monday, Powell said we are looking at a "fairly quiet evening", which is good news for those travelling home from their three-day weekend.
