  • Apple Reports Second Quarter Results

The third most popular smartphone was the iPhone 8 Plus with shipments in the tune of 8.3 million units.

"Customers chose iPhone X more than any other iPhone each week in the March quarter, just as they did following its launch in the December quarter", said Apple CEO Tim Cook. The news also comes after increasing speculation that the iPhone X was flopping, or wasn't meeting Apple's expectations in terms of sales.

According to a new report from Strategy Analytics, Apple's most expensive smartphone ever, with a $1319 CAD starting price, has defied expectations to sell almost 50 million units since its launch just six months ago.

Xiaomi's "Desh Ka Smartphone" Redmi 5A was fifth on the list with 5.4 million units sold.

Apple took the top four spots rounded out with the iPhone 8 at 12.5M, iPhone 8 Plus at 8.3M, and iPhone 7 at 5.6M. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, which were believed to be unimpressive when compared to the iPhone X managed to be among the best selling smartphones of the quarter. In today's reported market numbers, we see iPhone X as the clear leader in smartphone sales - by a significant margin.

That's unless Apple finds a way to fast charge using the Lightning cable, but that would need to be upgraded to allow more power through, and that would mean users would need to go out and buy an "old" Lightning cable to connect their iPhone to a computer or more standard charging USB outlet. "Given our confidence in Apple's future, we are very happy to announce that our Board has approved a new $100 billion share repurchase authorization and a 16 percent increase in our quarterly dividend". New iPhone X SE Leaks suggest that that the phone will have no physical home button.

Global smartphone shipments reached 345 million units in Q1 2018, according to research from Strategy Analytics. Apple also sold 9.1 million iPad tablets during the three month period, basically in-line with forecasts of 9.17 million units. Xiaomi enjoys a big pie of the smartphone market share in India.

The phone managed to beat analysts' fears regarding its market performance due to its high price.

It is a mind-boggling statistic that the top five best selling smartphones were from the same company, Apple. It also reduces the number of shares trading, which increases earnings per share - a key yardstick for measuring a company's value.

The phone has shipped an impressive 16 million units already.

Suppliers around the globe had warned of smartphone weakness, playing into fears that the company known for popularizing personal computers, tablets and smartphones had become too reliant on the iPhone.
