  • Nine aboard US military plane destroyed in fiery crash

A U.S. military cargo plane carrying nine people crashed a few miles from the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport in eastern Georgia on Wednesday, U.S. military officials said.

Adjutant General Isabelo Rivera says the aging C-130 Hercules had been used to rescue and resupply US citizens after last year's hurricanes, among many other missions.

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport said flights were being impacted by the plane crash and urged travelers to check with airlines regarding their flights.

Photographs on Twitter showed the wreckage of a plane engulfed in flames and billowing black smoke. The Associated Press reports authorities said none of the 9 people on board survived.

A Puerto Rican Government source said that none of the personnel apparently survived the plane crash.

The 165th Airlift Wing confirmed the crash happened during a training exercise.

According to Isabelo Rivera, Puerto Rico's Adjutant General, the C-130 had been in Savannah at a maintenance facility doing repairs during the month of April.

"Please join me in thoughts and prayers for the victims, their families and the great men and women of the National Guard", he wrote.

"We don't know the cause of the crash", said Maj.

More than 2,500 of the massive cargo planes have been built here since 1954.

First round of severe weather tonight, large hail and tornadoes are possible
If storms develop as anticipated, all severe weather hazards would be possible Tuesday night, Wednesday and Thursday. For the past week, conditions have been mostly quiet across Central Illinois, which has meant mostly dry weather.

Motorist Mark Jones told the Savannah Morning News that he saw the plane hit the road right in front of him, and explode in a huge fireball.

Video from a business near the crash shows the horrifying final moments of the hulking plane, a version normally outfitted to do weather reconnaissance.

The Air Force says an Air National Guard C-130 cargo plane has crashed near an airport in Savannah, Georgia.

"We have to warn people", said Gena Bilbo, spokesperson for the Effingham County Sheriff's Office, said in a news conference.

"It miraculously did not hit any cars, any homes", Bilbo said.

The crew was flying the C-130 into retirement Wednesday when it plunged onto a highway on the outskirts of Savannah, Georgia.

As reported, the aircraft crashed near 11:30 a. m. today shortly after taking off from Savannah Airport in the course of a routine mission to Arizona.

Chatham County Emergency Management Agency tweeted: "There has been a plane crash at the intersection of Hwy 21 at Crossgate Rd".

The names of those killed in the crash were not released pending notification of next of kin, officials said. The National Guard tweeted that it will look into the incident.

Paul Dahlen told The Associated Press that all those aboard were Puerto Ricans who had recently left the US territory for a training mission on the USA mainland.
