German Palestine Association Slams Abbas' 'Anti-Semitic' Holocaust Remarks

Michael Oren, former Israeli ambassador to the United States and now Deputy Minister for Diplomacy, commented, "Mahmoud Abbas says money-lending Jews provoked Holocaust, denied any Jewish connection to the Land of Israel, and again called the Jewish state a European colonial project".

In 1982 Abbas obtained a doctorate in history at the Moscow Institute of Orientalism in the then-Soviet Union.

Meanwhile, Israeli PM Netanyahu and the US Ambassador to Israel have condemned Abbas for this antisemitic speech.

The condemnations came after Abbas, who has faced accusations of anti-Semitism before, suggested in an address to a rare meeting of the Palestinian National Council on Monday night that Jews' relations with banking had led to hostility against them.

However, Abbas has continually called for a two state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian question - essentially supporting Israel's right to exist.

Jewish groups also condemned Abbas' comments, made in a speech on Monday to the Palestinian National Council, that Jews had suffered historically due to their professions, such as banking.

In March, Abbas labelled Friedman a "son of a dog" during an attack on Trump's policies while also calling him a "settler", referring to his support for Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. "No doubt he feels embittered and besieged on all sides", the paper declared.

The update, which rolled out to most users during the first quarter, was meant to make the interface less confusing. A Change.org petition asking the company to remove the redesign now has more than 1.2 million signatures.

Netanyahu's criticism was echoed by Jewish leaders around the world.

"Palestinians need a leader with energy, integrity and vision, one who might have a better chance of achieving Palestinian independence and enabling both peoples to live in peace". He assumed the leadership of Fatah, the PLO and the Palestinian Authority after Arafat died in 2004. The aging Palestinian leader has not designated a successor.

This isn't the first time Abbas has been criticized for engaging in anti-Semitic rhetoric.

The European Union called the remarks "unacceptable". His office later admitted the claim was baseless and retracted it.

The European Jewish Congress called on European officials to cease all contact with Abbas until he apologized. He also asserted that Israel was created to safeguard European interests as "a colonial project that has nothing to do with Judaism".

"Apparently the Holocaust denier is still a Holocaust denier".

These anti-Semitic comments are reminiscent of his Holocaust denying doctoral thesis, which grossly underestimates the number of Jews killed in the genocide and focuses on an unsubstantiated relationship between Zionists and Nazis.
