Deadly dust storm leaves 72 dead, 130 injured in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan

  • Nearly 70 dead, dozens injured as squall, sandstorms hit parts of north India

As much as 71 people were killed and over 100 others injured after a powerful dust storm hit western and northern parts of the country on Wednesday night.

At least 27 people have died in Rajasthan after a high-intensity squall swept through eastern parts of state, news agency ANI said.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who is campaigning for the BJP in Karnataka, has told officials to ensure rescue and relief work in the worst hit Agra, Bijnore, Bareilly, Unnao, Saharanpur, Pilibhit, Firozabad, Chitrakoot, Muzaffarnagar and Rae Bareli districts. The storm uprooted trees and disrupted power supply in a vast area beyond the the state.

The state government has said that it is assessing the loss incurred. The falling trees and electric poles caused the maximum accidents, leaving nearly 100 people injured, Yadav said. With this, the trees got uprooted, electric wires fell off and many houses burnt.

Relief commissioner Sanjay Kumar said 36 people died there as the wind speed touched 80 miles per hour.

"Most of the 33 deaths and 102 injuries across our state were from three districts Alwar, Dholpur and Bharatpur", Gera told AFP.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje in a series of tweets said that ministers have been directed to monitor relief work in the affected districts.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced a compensation of up to 4 lakhs Indian rupees (about 4,000 USA dollars) to the families of the deceased and 50,000 rupees (about 750 US dollars) for each of the injured, said the report.

Dust storms with high winds are common during the summer in northern and eastern India.

Hemant Gera, head of Rajasthan's Disaster Management and Relief Department said emergency services are on alert and that people should not sleep outdoors.

Indian Premier Narendra Modi took to twitter and expressed condolences to the bereaved families.
