Dominican Republic establishes ties with China in blow to Taiwan

  • Taiwan 'deeply upset' by Dominican Republic switch to Beijing

The Dominican Republic severed ties with Taiwan after almost 80 years and switched its allegiance to China, Beijing and Taipei confirmed on Tuesday, in another diplomatic blow to the self-ruled island.

The two meetings took place in third countries, once in a European country in 2016 and a second time in a Latin American country in March 2017.

He said China had offered financial incentives to attract the Dominican Republic's support.

Despite not being formally recognized by the majority of countries in the world and being excluded from the United Nations, Taiwan maintains official diplomatic relations with a limited number of countries that recognize Taiwan instead of China.

The Communist Party considers Taiwan a province and has criticized Tsai's refusal to accept that both sides belong to "One China", its precondition for ties.

Liu expressed the protest of the Taiwan government against the Caribbean country for bowing to the enticement of Beijing's monetary assistance and thus ignoring the 77 years of diplomatic relations between Taiwan and the Dominican Republic.

Eagles seeking value on final day of National Football League draft
As a fourth-round pick to a quality Eagles' defense, Maddox should initially make his presence known on special teams. Peele said he patterns his game after National Football League tight ends Travis Kelce and Zach Ertz.

The Chinese government's top diplomat, State Councillor Wang Yi, lauded the decision, in comments to reporters in Beijing at a hastily arranged news conference.

The Dominican Republic said it believed the switch would be "extraordinarily positive for the future of our country" and that it recognised Taiwan as "an inalienable part of the Chinese territory".

On Monday, Taiwan's ambassador to the Dominican Republic Tang Ji-Zen (湯繼仁) told the ministry he had been called to meet with the country's acting foreign minister on April 30, something the ambassador found odd because he had never been summoned that way during his two years in the post.

The Dominican Republic has received millions of dollars in donations for development programs from Taiwan, but the government also started commercial and political contacts with China beginning in the middle of the past decade.

Espinal said the government informed Taiwan of its move earlier on Monday and thanked the Taiwanese for "the cooperation that we have shared for years". He said that had allowed "the development of very important programs" for the Dominican Republic.

Taiwan split from mainland China after the end of a civil war in 1949 and Beijing campaigns relentlessly to isolate the island globally. Chinese analysts say Beijing will likely continue to use its economic and political clout to lure away other Taiwanese allies until Tsai accedes to China's demands. "Such mistakes should be stopped immediately".
