  • The Golden State Killer is suspected of committing dozens and dozens of crimes in Sacramento County in the late 1970s

In April 2016, she died unexpectedly in her sleep.

After 1981, no known crimes were tied to the the Golden State Killer until May, 1986, when an 18-year-old woman was raped and murdered in Irvine, south of Los Angeles.

The man's daughter said the family was not aware that authorities had taken a DNA sample from him until the Federal Bureau of Investigation contacted her in April 2017 to ask for her help expanding the family's genetic tree as they searched for a suspect. The Golden State Killer was linked to 12 murders, 45 rapes and more than 120 home burglaries that spanned from Northern California to Ventura and Orange counties.

While people may not realize police can use public genealogy websites to solve crimes, it is probably legal, said Erin Murphy, a DNA expert and professor at New York University School of Law.

"He put plates on her back, which was his M.O.", said Margaret. "If you know anything about the cases, you know what this could mean", he said.

Patton Oswalt was quick to respond on Wednesday when authorities said his late wife's work chronicling the Golden State Killer did not help with the apprehension of a suspect.

"He's running out of time", he told the audience.

But was DeAngelo ever actually on McNamara's list of suspects?

"People who submit DNA for ancestors testing are unwittingly becoming genetic informants on their innocent family", Mercer said, adding that they "have fewer privacy protections than convicted offenders whose DNA is contained in regulated databanks". The FBI and officials at an afternoon press conference later confirmed that a suspect, Joseph James DeAngelo, had indeed been arrested.

Over the years, when news of the "Golden State Killer" would pop up, Dave said he closed himself off to it.

Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones referred to the genetic materials as "discarded DNA", however authorities on the time refused to offer specifics about the way it was collected or matched to the suspect. "I hadn't thought about it for so many years", she said. He was initially was charged with eight counts of murder and could face dozens more charges, according to authorities. "Both of us were moms who spend unwholesome amounts of time looking under rocks at the dark side of humanity", she wrote in her introduction to I'll Be Gone in the Dark.

The Auburn Journal from May 14, 1970, shows a wedding announcement of Bonnie Colwell and Joe DeAngelo, who police believe is the Golden State Killer.

The suspect, Joseph James DeAngelo, who was sacked from the Auburn Police Department, was arrested after a DNA sample came back as a match to the Golden State Killer, Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert said. "Justice is more important than a good quote in this case", she responded.

Grounds for making the arrest reside in scientific advancements - DNA - that have had the effect of making even the coldest case warm if that potential magic bullet is recovered at the crime scene.

"There's exhilaration, and I don't feel it now, but I can sense that tomorrow or the next day there's going to be a huge drop in serotonin and happiness when I realize she really isn't here", Oswalt said in an interview.
