3 protesters killed at Gaza border, hundreds wounded, Gaza medics report

  • Thousands of Gazans attend funeral of Palestinian journalist Ahmed Abu Hussein

Riyad Mansour made the comments at a press conference in NY on Friday, a few hours after Israeli troopers attacked Palestinian demonstrators in the besieged Gaza Strip, killing three and wounding more than 880 others during an anti-occupation protest on the fifth Friday of a six-week protest, known as the "Great March of Return".

Israel has rejected the global criticism, saying it is defending its sovereign border and accusing Gaza's Hamas leaders, who are organizing the protests, of using the crowds as cover to carry out attacks.

Hamas security forces prevented journalists from reaching the scene.

Among the wounded, 178 were shot with live ammunition on Friday while others sustained injuries from rubber-coated steel rounds, or required treatment for tear gas exposure.

The letter to Guterres describes the "horrific casualty figures" as "the predictable outcome of the manifestly illegal rules of engagement implemented during the demonstrations, of ordering soldiers to use lethal gunfire against unarmed demonstrators who pose no mortal danger".

Protesters hurled stones and rolled burning tyres towards the fence, and some attached cans of burning petrol to kites and flew them into Israeli territory.

The violence came shortly after a top United Nations official urged Israel to refrain from using excessive force against the protesters.

The Israeli military fighter jets have targeted six military targets belonging to Hamas's naval force in the northern Gaza Strip, said the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

The ministry said he was shot in the head by Israeli forces at the fence east of Gaza city.

Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, a military spokesman, said the event was unlike anything Israel has seen over the past month.

Owaida is the second teenager killed by Israeli fire recently, following the death of Mohhamed Ayoush, 15, last week.

The call from the worldwide rights group for a halt of weapons sales to Israel came as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Ra'ad al-Hussein put the death toll at 42 Palestinians, with no reports of Israeli casualties.

Israel's response to the demonstrators has come under fierce criticism from the UN Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, who called for into question the Israeli army's use of "excessive force", adding that Israel should be held to account.

"The terrorists are hiding while allowing, even hoping, for their people to die. This is evil in its purest form", Dannon said.

Hamas denies the Israeli accusations.

Hamas official Mushir Al-Masri said the claims were an "attempt to escape responsibility and to cover up for the execution of unarmed children and people by occupation soldiers".

May 15 is the date the Palestinians mark as the "Nakba", or "Catastrophe", when hundreds of thousands fled or were driven out of their homes during violence in the 1948-49 war between the newly-created state of Israel and its Arab neighbors.

This occupation has had a devastating impact on the lives of the almost two million Palestinians living in the area. Israel withdrew its troops and settlers from Gaza in 2005 but maintains tight control of its land and sea borders.

The footage also showed large numbers of Gazans close to the border fence.
