Arizona governor announces deal to raise teacher pay 20 percent by 2020

"They're not making an effort". This all started in West Virginia, then it moved to Oklahoma, now it's here as well as Arizona. Educators in Oklahoma and Kentucky followed.

That could most immediately provide dollars for the 19 percent teacher pay hike that Gov. Doug Ducey and Republican legislative leaders have agreed to provide by the 2020-2021 school year. He also is counting a 1 percent raise he gave previous year to come to the 20 percent figure. We expect more and more out of our teachers every year, from raising standardized testing scores to protecting students during massacres, while we slash their funding. To beat a different kind of heat, legislators in the GOP-dominated Arizona House and Senate on Thursday adjourned early for the week, allowing lawmakers steer clear of the protesters.

The movement's organizers put out specific demands ahead of the walkout, including a 20-percent salary increase, restoration of education funding to 2008 levels, extension of salary increases to support staff, development of a permanent structure for annual raises and a freeze on future tax cuts until per-pupil funding matches the national average.

Teachers like Grant who have organized a grassroots movement never seen before in the state are not bending.

Buckley who teaches at Red Mountain High School in Mesa, said the additional revenues will help address overcrowded classrooms, teachers paying for supplies from their own and, in some cases, teachers leaving the profession or leave the state "because they could not afford to support their own family".

A Little Sun This Afternoon; Rain and Storms Thursday
Mostly sunny skies and warmer too! Highs will climb into the lower 80s on Tuesday , which will make it the warmest day of 2018! A cold front on Wednesday will bring the chance for more showers, especially in the evening, as highs stay in the upper 60s.

"Barbara Skinner, a Phoenix-area educator, said she was "disappointed" in the lawmakers".

State Senator Greg McCortney told a crowd: "I absolutely believe we're not going to give your school the money to pay for that pay raise". "That's a mixed message you're sending the public and the country about who you really are and what your priorities are". As Will, an Arizona special education teacher, told World Socialist Web Site reporters: "The Democrats are even worse than the Republicans".

Schools all over the state cancelled classes and activities on Thursday and Friday due to the walkout.

Colorado and Arizona teachers donned red shirts and descended upon their Capitols for a second day in a growing educator uprising. Leaders of the grassroots group Arizona Educators United planned to survey members over the weekend on whether to continue the walkout. But school boards would be required to seek input from teachers and staff on how to use those dollars. But teachers say Colorado has a long way to go to recover lost ground during the downturn and stick to the provisions of a voter-approved amendment aimed at increasing school funding and countering the effect of the state's strict tax-and-spending limits.

Despite touring news stations to promote his plan, however, he presented no details on where the money will come from. "This is undeniably and clearly a mandate for action", union President Joe Thomas said. Teachers there are fearful that changes to the state pension system will further harm their income. Pro-charter advocacy group Center for Education Reform has accused national unions of recruiting charter educators into protesting. That has allowed lawmakers to boost education funding ... but there's still a lot of outstanding issues that teachers want to be addressed.
