"Schoolhouse Rock!" Composer Bob Dorough Dead at 94

Bob Dorough songs helped teach children about grammar and government on ABC's "Schoolhouse Rock". Bob Dorough died of natural causes yesterday at his home in Mount Bethel, Pennsylvania.

"Dorough collaborated with [Miles] Davis on the serrated holiday song "Blue Xmas (To Whom It May Concern)" and later sang on "Nothing Like You", the closing track of Davis" 1967 album Sorcerer. The executive said his sons couldn't multiply and asked Dorough to set the multiplication tables to music.

Dorough, born in Arkansas and raised in Texas, took to music early, joining his high school's band and serving three years in a special services army band unit. Though the most popular are the songs from the 1970s run - devoted to grammar, multiplication, American history and science - the series was occasionally revived to look at such topics as computers, finance, and ecology.

The movie and TV database IMDB says Dorough's credits from the series include memorable tunes like "Three Is a Magic Number", "Verb: That's What's Happening", and "Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Get Your Adverbs Here".

Bob Dorough, whose career began as a composer, arranger and singer in the booming NY jazz scene of the '50s and '60s before he became the musical keystone of Schoolhouse Rock!

Dorough remained active all his life.
