Looking a sort of ghostly shadow of his recent self, his stride more laboured than loping, Mo Farah crossed the finish line of the London Marathon in third place, two minutes and four seconds behind victor Eliud Kipchoge, as humbled if not as humanly broken as he's ever been.

Steve Jones's mark had stood since 1985 but Farah, who finished third behind Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge and Ethiopia's Tola Shura Kitata, clocked 2:06.21 in the hottest marathon in the race's history.

"I am knackered", said the 35-year-old, who broke the British marathon record.

"The guys just went for it, at world record pace".

"I enjoyed the race very much", Kipchoge said.

"It's so different to the track".

"I gave 110% like I always do. You get heavy legs, mentally you need to be strong and pace yourself".

Farah might have been quicker still but for temperatures of 24C and a problem collecting his drink at the 10km mark which he blamed on staff being too busy taking pictures and led to a lengthy mid-race exchange with motorbike-riding marathon officials.

"I'm just enjoying life to be honest and I think that's what's helping".

Israel and Iran war is near
In fact, the Israelis fear both "Iranian consolidation", as Lieberman puts it, and Russian interference in their operations. Clearly, Israel can not afford Syria turning into another base of operation serving Iranian strategic plans against Israel.

Cheruiyot, 34, took advantage of failed attempts to break Paula Radcliffe's 15-year-old world record by last year's victor Keitany and runner-up Tirunesh Dibaba.

The Kenyan led the way with Ethiopian great Kenenisa Bekele and last year's victor Daniel Wanjiru of Kenya also in the mix.

Kipchoge's victory was the 14th by a Kenyan man in London and his victory completed a seventh London double by the east African nation after compatriot Vivian Cheruiyot had overhauled record-chasing favourite Mary Keitany for the biggest win of her burgeoning road race career.

Kenya's Vivian Cheruiyot crosses the finish line to win the elite women's race of the 2018 London Marathon in central London. "I had to get that right".

"Just physically doing the 42km felt a lot easier after last weekend and knowing that my body is happy to do it", said de Rozario.

The Briton won in 1:31.15 while Switzerland's Marcel Hug came second and American Daniel Romanchuk third.

Keitany was expected to sweep to victory having recorded the fastest ever time for a female a year ago although she was unable to see off her fellow Kenyan.

Partridge, who claimed eighth place, added: "It's only the second time I've run past 23 miles and I've only ever done the full distance once (during training)".
