Vice President Mike Pence told USA allies in Latin America on Saturday that the US -led airstrikes on Syria "degraded and crippled" the country's chemical weapons capability in a series of meetings at an global summit.

United States Vice President Michael Pence on Saturday said that Russian Federation is "on the wrong side of the war" while referring to recent strikes on Syria by the USA along with Germany and France.

But that was before the U.S., Britain and France launched the joint airstrikes Friday in retaliation for a suspected chemical-weapons attack on April 7 that killed 43 people and injured hundreds more in a rebel-held enclave near Damascus.

The group says the mission "will continue its deployment to the Syrian Arab Republic to establish facts around the allegations of chemical weapons use in Douma".

The discussions on the sidelines of the Summit of the Americas in Peru came as United States officials said they believed they were narrowing differences over a revised North American Free Trade Agreement, 24 years after its inception.

There had been expectations leading up to the meeting that NAFTA would dominate the discussion, particularly after conflicting messages from US trade officials and President Donald Trump earlier in the week.

Vice President Mike Pence's choice as his new top national security aide withdrew after a news report that President Donald Trump had objected to the appointment. Earlier in the day, Pence met separately with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto. "We are very close to the kind of breakthrough on issues of immigration, drug interjection" that will be of benefit to both sides, Pence said. The conference brought together leaders of more than 30 countries.

Shortly before Trump's address to the nation Friday night, Pence was whisked away from the summit in his motorcade so he could return to his hotel to inform congressional leaders of the pending missile strikes.
