Commonwealth Games: Transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard withdraws after suffering injury

  • A champion lifter when still classified as male critics say Laurel Hubbard cannot be beaten as a female

Hubbard left her arrival at the Commonwealth Games to the last minute, arriving after the rest of New Zealand's weightlifting team in order to keep a low profile, refusing any media interviews.

Hubbard passed all the guidelines which allowed the Commonwealth Games Federation to authorise her participation in the 2018 games.

She wasn't thinking about gold going into the competition because of Hubbard, but even when the Kiwi dropped out after hurting her arm in her final snatch lift, Stowers continued to concentrate on her own game.

The 40-year-old had no regrets about what had happened, saying: "At this stage we don't know the exact details of the injury", according to the Australian Associated Press.

"A man is a man and a woman is a woman and I know a lot of changes have gone through, but in the past Laurel Hubbard used to be a male champion weightlifter", head coach Jerry Wallwork said.

But she bailed out of her first attempt at the clean and jerk, and could not return to push her claims.

Samoa's Feagaiga Stowers, second behind Hubbard before her injury, took gold with a total lift of 253kg, ahead of Charisma Amoe-Tarrant from Nauru and England's Emily Campbell. She previously said: "It would be untrue to say the thought [of a bad reception from the crowd] never crossed my mind".

Still, Hubbard maintains she was treated with dignity and support.

"People are entitled to their opinion but at the end of the day I think she's pretty courageous for what she's been doing".

Casualties reported in strike on Syria air base: state media
The strikes came one day after a suspected chemical gas attack near Damascus in Syria , where dozens of people have been killed . Israel hit the base, known as T4, in February, after it said an Iranian drone that violated Israeli airspace took off from it.

Hubbard, who spent most of her life as Gavin before transitioning, won two medals at last year's world championships.

Hubbard claimed that her silver medal at the World Championships past year proves she does not have an unfair advantage.

Not one of the different lifters, together with Australia's Deb Loveley-Acason, obtained anyplace close to Hubbard's mark.

"I love the way she just wanted to come and not just to turn up, but actually test herself".

Hubbard said she did not regret going for the higher weight, despite the fact she already had the biggest lift in the snatch after just one attempt. "But there's no indication at all today that they were anything other than absolutely fantastic, a real credit to the Australian people and also the broader sporting community".

Hubbard, 39, said it was likely a ruptured ligament, the ABC reported.

"I think you have to be true to yourself and I hope in this case that's what I've done", Hubbard added.

She was proud to have made history.
