  • Facebook finally steps up on privacy. Now it's Congress's turn

But you'd be wrong. The same goes for other everyday online apps and services that use Facebook as a shortcut to building a profile on you.

From executives believing in a growth-at-all-costs strategy to potentially manipulating records by removing Facebook executives' sent messages while keeping those they received - the saga appears to be seeing no end.

Facebook has always been clear that its workers can review posts to ensure they comply with its community standards.

"If a company collects a person's data for a certain objective, it has to obtain their consent - and under the new rules it's explicit and affirmative consent - if it wants to forward it to a third party or use it for a different goal", Wigand said. "We do not listen to your voice and video calls".

It started with revelations that Cambridge Analytica, a data-mining firm, improperly accessed the private information of tens of millions of users to try to influence elections around the world.

The episode has sparked questions over privacy on the social media platform, and led to calls for tough new regulation. The social media site quietly introduced a time-lapse function, similar to Snapchat and exclusive to its executives, which allowed users to automatically delete its sent messages in others' inboxes, according to the report.

Horizons S&P 500 Covered Call ETF (HSPX) Rises 1.6% for April 5
While the UK's FTSE 100 Index crept up by 0.1%, the French CAC 40 Index dipped by 0.2% and the German DAX Index fell by 0.4%. The S&P 500 posted one new 52-week high and eight new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 30 new highs and 89 new lows.

Zuckerberg was asked about Facebook's effect on the political turmoil in Myanmar, where elements of the country's Buddhist majority, including the army, have been persecuting the Muslim minority Rohingyas.

"What we didn't do is the next step of an audit and we're trying to that now", she said.

"In this particular instance, a number of people reported receiving these messages which prompted us to begin investigating", a spokesperson said.

A Facebook spokesperson, sharing the response with IANS, said a possible breach of data of 562,455 users happened after 335 Facebook users in India installed a quiz app, "thisisyourdigitallife" between November 2013 and December 2015.

The Sony hack targeted the emails of Sony film executives, which revealed a side of Hollywood rarely seen by outsiders, and the decision to name the event as a catalyst for Facebook's message purge indicates how troubling the incident was in Silicon Valley - and that Facebook was concerned about being hacked.

Ultimately, Facebook cannot shy away from the criticism over the way the company manages their data, even as the company looks to shy away from controversy. Facebook could keep doing this business, but it didn't take much for the negative PR appearances to outweigh its need; Facebook could simply drop it. Data is frequently shared and sold between massive data brokers, and requesting that you be deleted from one of them means it's only a matter of time until your information gets shared by another.
