Stoneman Douglas students return to school with stepped-up security, clear backpacks

  • A group of black students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High called a press conference to say they have concerns that may not mirror those of their white peers

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students returned to stricter security measures when classes resumed Monday after spring break.

It's just that with this piece of security theater, the people who suffer the infringements on their liberties are gun owners rather than (or as well as) students.

Following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 students and staff dead, transparent backpacks are now the only school bags allowed on the campus. Some students said they're missing the point. They calculated the $1.05 amount by dividing the total amount of money his campaign received from the NRA by the number of students in the state.

Koerber and others have attached an orange $1.05 price tag to their bags which they say is meant to protest politicians, including Florida Senator Marco Rubio, who accept money from the National Rifle Association. "My school was a place where everyone felt comfortable, it was a home away from home, and now that home has been destroyed", he said.

The Parkland, Florida school shooting survivors return to school on Monday for the first time since the March For Our Lives events across the country, which they helped organize.

"Feminine hygiene products that we need, that we have to carry with us, we can't choose to be on our menstrual or not".

Cruz, 19, a former Stoneman Douglas student, entered campus through an open gate shortly before school ended for the day, carrying his AR-15 rifle in a bag.

"Starting off the last quarter of senior year right, with a good ol' violation of privacy!" she said in another tweet.

White House confirms Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will meet
On March 29, Russian Federation ordered the expulsion of 60 U.S. diplomats and the closing of the United States consulate in St. Monday's festivities marked the 140th White House Easter Egg Roll - a tradition dating back to the presidency of Rutherford B.

Tuesday was better, he said, although acts of defiance against the measures from students on campus have dominated much of the discussion on the ground and on social media.

"We come to school to learn, so I don't think that we should need to subject ourselves to these measures".

"Just implement a system that works".

"I would say that our voices were not intentionally excluded, but they were not intentionally included", said Kai Koerber, a junior.

Plenty of students also joked about the backpacks, saying they wouldn't be sharing the gum their peers can now see through clear plastic.

Student Matthew Satar said if somebody wanted to hide something in the clear backpack, they still could.

"The people with the power to make changes keep making the wrong changes", she said.

"Do you want me to take my shoes off when I walk into school as well?" tweeted Carly Novell, a senior at the school and editor of the Eagle Eye student newspaper.
