Mexico Can Stop Caravans

  • Trump says Mexico does little to stop migrants on its southern border; he's wrong

The moves follow intense criticism from President Donald Trump, who publicly vented his frustration with the Mexican government for allowing the caravan to travel unimpeded. Cash cow Nafta is in play, as is foreign aid to Honduras and the countries that allow this to happen.

About 1,100 migrants, many from Honduras, have been marching along roadsides and train tracks in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca.

Central American migrants participating in the Migrant Stations of the Cross caravan or "Via crucis", set up camp at a sports center during a stop on April 2.

The organised portions of the caravans usually have not gone much farther north than the Gulf coast state of Veracruz.

Mr Trump has already blasted Mexico and threatened to upend the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) over the caravan and yesterday also raised the prospect of withholding United States assistance. The group is expected to take buses to the last scheduled stop, a migrant rights symposium in central Puebla state on Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

"We have never seen a march of this size".

Immigration officials were registering the travelers, and providing suggestions that some could get humanitarian visas, while others would have to exit Mexico, The Washington Post reported. Mr Trump tweeted yesterday morning.

He said the group was waiting for the migration officers to return.

Trump said he thought Mexico was having some success in stopping the caravan.

On verge of his biggest title, Isner to face Zverev
A precise backhand down the line put him 40-15 ahead and the second break point was converted with a delicate touch at the net. He's playing well so far this week, so it's going to be a hard match. "I am super fresh and ready to go for the final".

In addition to the 125 warning signs put up around Mexicali, Beta agents have installed several 55-gallon drums of water at strategic border points [near the U.S.] to help keep migrants alive. "They laugh at our dumb immigration laws". Trump wrote on Twitter. We should have those laws. "Of course we will act ... to enforce our immigration laws, with no pressure whatsoever from any country whatsoever".

On Monday night, the Mexican government's National Institute of Immigration (INM), which regulates Mexico's internal migration, announced that it plans to disband the Central American illegal alien caravan by Wednesday.

On Monday, Mexico's interior minister, Alfonso Navarrete, said he and U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen had spoken.

But it added that Mexico considers the annual caravans to be "a public demonstration that seeks to call attention to the migration phenomenon and the importance of respecting the rights of Central Americans".

"We realized that being demanding is not the only thing that is important", Xicotencatl said. The caravan has been a yearly event since 2010 and since the migrants entered the country in an irregular fashion, they are subject to Mexican immigration enforcement.

But it suggested it is not up to Mexico to keep people from going to the United States to apply for asylum.

Mr Trump's latest salvo against the migrants' journey comes as he has stepped up his immigration rhetoric in recent days, and his administration has moved to further crack down on people who are in the USA illegally. The caravan "doesn't have a sense of migrant protection".

Mexico, however, does routinely stop and deport Central Americans, sometimes in numbers that rival those of the United States.

Deportations of foreigners dropped from 176,726 in 2015 to 76,433 in 2017, in part because fewer were believed to have come to Mexico, and more were requesting asylum in Mexico.
