Steven Bochco, o-creator of NYPD Blue, Hill Street Blues, dies

Tributes were pouring in Monday for Steven Bochco, the writer and producer behind the iconic 1980s and '90s TV shows "Hill Street Blues", "L.A. Law" and "NYPD Blue", after Bochco's death Sunday at the age of 74.

As the Hollywood Reporter notes, Bochco had been battling leukemia, with spokesman Phillip Arnold stating, "Steven fought cancer with strength, courage, grace and his unsurpassed sense of humor". He died peacefully in his sleep with is family close by. His most recent series was TNT's Murder in the First, which ran from 2014 until 2016. He moved to the production company MTM Enterprises in the late 1970s and was later chosen to help write a cop drama ordered by NBC - "Hill Street Blues".

"I became a cop because of the show 'Hill Street Blues, '" said a detective who was a rookie in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, in the early 1990s.

He was born in NY to Rudolph, a violinist, and Mimi, a painter and jewellery designer.

He had his first job at Universal after college and worked on "Columbo" for a few seasons. After attending New York University and Carnegie Mellon University, he went on to write several series for Universal Studios.

Bochco received 10 Emmys for producing and writing and he was nominated 30 times over the course of his career.

A victor of 10 Primetime Emmy Awards, Bochco was nominated for a total of 30 Emmys and won four Peabodys.

Steven Bochco created the boundary-pushing series "Hill Street Blues" and "NYPD Blue", among others.

As Kuzyk recalls it, after seeing herself on "Hill Street Blues" for the first time she was instantly distracted by what she considered a bad hairstyle.

As a result he was able to challenge the narrow censorship framework in which American network television must live and create some of the most memorable and impactful programs of his generation.

Bochco also produced Doogie Howser, M.D. which launched the career of actor Neil Patrick Harris. The show brought a realism to lawyers and law firms and accurately portrayed legal issues, all while tackling tough and sensitive subjects like capital punishment and AIDS. "I said to [NBC entertainment exec] Brandon [Tartikoff], 'We'll do this pilot for you on the condition that you leave us completely alone to do whatever we want.' And he said OK".

Bochco is survived by his third wife, Dayna Kalins, three children as well as two grandchildren.
