The Illinois Department of Health (IDPH) has issued a warning over the dangers of using synthetic cannabinoids after 38 people suffered severe bleeding and one person died. "They can contain a variety of chemicals, and users often don't know what those are, such as rat poison", said IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D.

The health department said Thursday that symptoms have included bleeding from the eyes and ears.

Synthetic cannabinoids fall into a category of drugs called new psychoactive substances, which are unregulated mind-altering substances that are newly available on the market and meant to cause the same effects as illegal drugs, according to IDPH. "Despite the perception that synthetic cannabinoids are a safe alternative to marijuana, they can cause very severe illness".

IL bans synthetic marijuana, but some manufacturers have been able to bypass strict laws by making slight modifications to the product to sell them legally.

Anyone who has a serious reaction to synthetic cannabinoids should call 911 or go to the emergency department immediately.

Since 2015 hundreds of people across the USA have overdosed and been hospitalized after smoking too much or bad batches of synthetic cannabis. "It is hard to know what's in them or what your reaction to them will be". On Friday, officials clarified that while this can happen, those affected in IL have reported other symptoms, like coughing up blood, blood in urine, bloody noses, bleeding gums and, for women, heavier than usual menstrual flow. Women who are menstruating have also experienced a higher than average flow. The best doctors have is that the factory that made this stuff accidentally put an anticoagulant into the mix, or have stumbled over a mix of chemicals they didn't realize had these bleed-from-random-orifices effects. Officials have reported 22 people taken to the ER with severe bleeding connected to synthetic cannabinoid products since March 7, the Chicago Tribune reports. IDPH spokeswoman Melaney Arnold told the Chicago newspaper that the product is banned for sale across the state, but some manufacturers alter the "molecular makeup of the products" to "get around" the law. They can be smoked or sold as liquids to be vaporized in e-cigarettes and other devices.
