President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi of Egypt has won a second term.

Sisi is running nearly unchallenged after the other serious candidates were either arrested or intimidated and he is widely expected to win a second four-year term.

The initial results also revealed that Sisi's sole rival in the race, little known politician Moussa Mostafa Moussa, garnered only three percent of the votes. The number of eligible voters who cast their ballots stood at 95,486, with 86,112 valid votes registered, it said.Alexandria governorate has more than 3.8 million eligible voters.

With the election seen by many, including Sisi, as a referendum on his presidency, the focus is on turnout which he has sought to support tough economic reforms and a fight against Islamist militants.

El-Sisi was first elected in 2014, a year after leading a military coup as the army's Chief of Staff that overthrew Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood.

A source told Al-Ahram that 5% of the ballots had been spoiled, including by voters inserting the names of candidates not among the two approved.

The Spokesman of the National Electoral Commission Mahmoud al-Sherif announced an immediate fine worth of EGP 500 for those who are eligible to vote, yet haven't participated in the 2018 presidential elections.

Mr Sisi hailed the participation of Egyptians in the polls on Wednesday night, saying it reflected "the greatness of the country".

As ballots are tallied for official results due on April 2, the focus is on turnout since Sisi faced no credible opposition after a crackdown against serious challengers.
