Thad Cochran, who is stepping down April 1 for health reasons.

Hyde-Smith will be the first woman to represent MS in Congress once Cochran resigns April 1.

As word trickled out of Mississippi Monday that Hyde-Smith was going to get the appointment, Sen. The term expires in January 2021, not January 2020.

"My fellow Mississippians, please help me welcome our next Senator from MS, our dear friend, Cindy Hyde-Smith", said Governor Bryant.

Hyde-Smith thanked Bryant for the appointment.

"I am truly humbled. I am stronger today than I think I have ever been", Hyde-Smith told about 200 people who gathered outside a train depot in Brookhaven, the south MS city where she lives with her husband, Michael Smith, and their daughter, Anna-Michael Smith, a college freshman. That is the hometown of Cindy Hyde-Smith, a Republican who was first elected agriculture commissioner in 2011. She switched to the Republican Party in late 2010 and was elected statewide in 2011 as the MS commissioner of agriculture. State Sen. Chris McDaniel (R), a fiery anti-establishment conservative, has abandoned plans to challenge Sen. It appears from the press coverage that Hyde-Smith will be able to count on support from the GOP "establishment" at the state and national level, the fact that the White House is presently balking at backing her bid and that McDaniel is mounting a challenge seems to guarantee that there will be another epic battle in MS, although it probably won't be almost as weird as the primary battle between Cochran and McDaniel four years ago. "She is a very well-qualified person whose experiences and excellent character will benefit our state in Washington", Cochran stated.

PM congratulates Angela Merkel on assuming office as German Chancellor
In two separate statements, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. All Germans need to benefit from the longest economic boom since 1990, she said.

She pledged to work closely with Mississippi's other Republican senator, Roger Wicker, and to promote President Donald Trump's agenda. With the planned retirement of Thad Cochran, the GOP must now deal with another series of uncertainties concerning candidate choice, increased Democrat voter turnout for special elections, and an unpredictable wind that may not favor the Republicans when time to hold another special election to fill Cochran's seat arrives this November.

In November, she will be challenged by fellow republican Chris McDaniel, and democrat Mike Espy. Therefore, it has been noted with some surprise, that voter turnout is cited as the moving variable in numerous recent races where Republicans are losing seats to Democrats, not necessarily any sort of depressed sentiment toward the sitting President. His choice to end his tenure as one of Mississippi's two Republican Senators has already created confusion and angst for the GOP, who are concerned about this year's Congressional midterm races. What concerns some Republicans is that Mr. McDaniel's following on the right could, in a potentially crowded field, earn him a position in the runoff against a Democrat. "We don't want what happened in Alabama or Pennsylvania-18 to happen here in Mississippi".

Hyde-Smith grew up in the small town of Monticello in southern MS, and farmer Barbara Lowe, who still lives there, has known her for decades. Cindy is a lifelong conservative with a deep commitment to the people of Mississippi.

"MS needs to send a conservative to Washington to drain the swamp, and if elected, that is what I intend to do". Cochran now holds the highly coveted chairmanship of the Senate Appropriations Committee, a position of seniority which will go to Senator Richard Shelby of Alabama upon Cochran's retirement.

Hyde-Smith last spoke to Bush's organization in July of 2017.

Hyde-Smith could be vulnerable to attacks singling her out for her past affiliation with the Democratic Party, Republicans with a close eye on the emerging contest said this week.
