Brian Acton, co-founder of WhatsApp, speaks at the WSJD Live conference.

He didn't elaborate, but Acton, who previously headed engineering for WhatsApp, is a well-known advocate for privacy and encryption.

One notable thing about its co-founders is that while Jan Koum continues to lead the company, Brian Acton left the company earlier this year to start his own non-profit foundation.

The "Delete Facebook" train just got another passenger.

"In a recent tweet, Brian Acton wrote, "It is time", with a hashtag, to "#deletefacebook".

The highs and lows of the Wolf Pack NCAA Tournament game
Cody Martin led the way for the Wolf Pack, scoring 25 points in the comeback effort, along with seven assists and six boards. Their comeback was already epic, but it got that much better when the Titanic music was added to it.

Acton's tweet comes even as Facebook is in the eye of a storm after reports emerged that a political data analysis company Cambridge Analytica accessed 50 million Facebook users' data without their permission.

It must be noted that Acton didn't elaborate upon his reasons of joining the bandwagon, but Business Insider reports that his Facebook account appears to have been deactivated (for whatever reason), and folks are also pointing toward an old 2009 tweet from Acton, who related how he was rejected by Facebook while applying for a job. The app asked the users for the personal details of their Facebook friends.

The scandal has been growing since Friday night, when Facebook said it had suspended the accounts of data firm Cambridge Analytica, its parent company, psychology professor at the University of Cambridge named Dr. Aleksandr Kogan and whistleblower Christopher Wylie.

Sandy told Guadian that Facebook did not use its enforcement mechanisms or audit external developers to ensure data was not being misused.

He further claimed that Facebook felt like it was better not to know what happened with the data as it was in a stronger legal position if it didn't know about the abuse that was happening.
