Republican senator expects Trump to pull out of Iran…

  • As relations with North Korea thaw, Iran poses a bigger threat

Tillerson's dismissal this week may hasten its demise. In particular Trump says that the "terrible" agreement does not address Iran´s ballistic missile programme or Tehran´s activities in the Middle East. And now they are wondering if there is any point in continuing negotiations.

As US President Donald Trump's deadline of May 12 for Iran deal revisions approaches, the European Union is striving to keep the agreement alive. These include no penalties for Iran's missile work and support for militant groups in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and elsewhere.

This would cover Iran's ballistic missile program, its regional activities, the expiration of parts of the nuclear deal in the mid-2020s and tighter United Nations inspections, Hook said. In exchange, Tehran was granted widespread relief from worldwide trade, oil and banking sanctions.

He vowed in January, when he last extended those waivers, not to do so again unless the Europeans meet his demands to fix what he calls "flaws" in the deal.

How would the USA withdrawal combat Iran?

"But at the end of the day I think this: this whole situation with North Korea and the way that it's shaping up right now is ... somewhat unorthodox, and I think you're dealing with a leader there that probably doesn't think the same way that other countries and their leadership might", he added. That could prompt the Iranians to walk away as well, and perhaps even restart nuclear activities banned under the accord.

The representatives of the US, Russia, China, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Iran met in Vienna on Friday.

State Department policy planning chief Brian Hook, who is running the negotiations with Europe, will lead the USA delegation to the larger meeting in Austria's capital.

Foreign governments are already unsure who is shaping American policy, whom they should contact with questions and requests, and how to handle Trump's often unpredictable, go-it-alone approach to world affairs. For his part, Aragchi sees the writing on the wall.

Russia's state-run Zarubeznheft Oil Co. and Iran's Dana Energy are the contract's private signatories.

Will expel United Kingdom diplomats soon: Russian Federation
Now one member stands accused of using chemical weapons on the sovereign soil of another member. It is the largest expulsion of diplomats from Britain since the Cold War.

US President Trump has to decide, under the law, to whether to continue waiving US nuclear sanctions, or re-impose them, which would potentially kill the deal.

One European diplomat said representatives from Europe were desperate to save the JCPOA from a possible collapse, which could be a case due to policies adopted by US President Donald Trump.

With Tillerson gone, the emphasis will likely change. But each time Trump faced another sanctions deadline, Tillerson met increased resistance to keeping the agreement alive.

Perhaps most importantly, though, Tillerson defied Trump on Iran. "With [Trump's intended replacement for Tillerson] Mike Pompeo, we have a very similar thought process".

As a congressman, Pompeo opposed the Obama-era Iran agreement as "unconscionable", and he said after Trump's election that he was looking forward to "rolling it back".

"We will not accept any changes, any interpretation or new measure aimed at limiting" the 2015 deal between Iran and major powers, said Ali Shamkhani in remarks carried by the ISNA news agency. "What the president said on January 12 is that we much reach a supplemental agreement with the European allies in three specific areas", he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has intensively lobbied Trump against the nuclear pact, which he sees as merely delaying Tehran's ability to produce a nuclear warhead.

"The missile dimension, the weaponisation effort, the nuclear component itself".

Pompeo may moderate some of his criticisms of the nuclear deal if he becomes secretary.
