  • Russia warns against 'anti-Russian hysteria' in Israel

The tough message came as Putin's foreign minister again vowed to kick British diplomats out of Russian Federation in revenge for Theresa May's crackdown on Kremlin spying.

The announcement from Downing Street on Friday comes after Russian Federation ignored a deadline earlier this week to explain whether it was behind the poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia on March 4 and instead demanded access to the evidence. May's decision to expel Russian diplomats but, correctly, questioned the haste with which it was done, especially since a thorough investigation had not been completed.

The new US sanctions against Russian Federation announced on Thursday failed to grab many headlines in Moscow on Friday morning, CBS News correspondent Elizabeth Palmer reports.

But while President Vladimir Putin has remained steadfastly focused on getting out the vote for an election he is virtually assured of winning, one Russian official has reacted to the Trump administration's latest round of punitive measures.

The British government has imposed sanctions on Russian Federation and expelled 23 diplomats in retaliation for the attack. The pair had come into contact with a nerve agent that experts have reportedly ruled "beyond a reasonable doubt" came from Russian Federation. Shortly after, a Russian lawmaker charged that the United States stole samples while helping to decommission the facility where Novichok was made in the 1990s.

Ms May blamed Moscow for the attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter, and gave 23 Russians who she said were spies working under diplomatic cover at the London embassy a week to leave. A report Friday in the Telegraph says it was put in the suitcase of Skripal's daughter before she left Russian Federation for Britain to see her father.

The Skripals were found slumped over on a park bench in the cathedral town of Salisbury, located near the famed ruins of Stonehenge. A British policeman who was also poisoned when he went to help them is in a serious but stable condition.

Writing in the Guardian on Friday, opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn called for "calm heads" and warned against rushing into a "new cold war". He suggested that the possibility that the Russians had lost control of the unsafe nerve agent - which May floated Monday but has since discounted - could not be excluded. "In my years in Parliament I have seen clear thinking in an global crisis overwhelmed by emotion and hasty judgments too many times", he wrote. The military grade nerve agent used in the attack, the first of its kind in Europe since World War II, has been identified as being from the Novichok class of chemical agents developed by Russian Federation during the Cold War.

In a statement, the four leaders said they shared the view of British investigators that "there is no plausible alternative explanation" for the attack. It is in the U.K.'s interests in terms of security, support and goodwill, if firm and resolute action - that is the need of the hour - is thoroughly backed by reason and evidence.
