Wallace overcomes Sharma to win Indian Open

  • Shubhankar Sharma is the joint leader after the third round of the Indian Open golf

In sharp contrast, the 27-year-old Englishman Matt Wallace, who was in joint lead with Shubhankar after Round III, dished out a steady and confident display to pip compatriot Andrew Johnston in the play-off after both ended up with 11-under 277.

Wallace, who won the Portugal Open previous year in only his fourth European Tour event, had built a two-shot advantage after collecting five birdies in his opening 10 holes, including a chip-in at the 10th.

Wallace, who stayed in contention throughout the week, overcame compatriot Andrew Johnston in the play-off, 18th hole, to clinch his first Indian Open title and take home the winner's cheque of United States dollars 291,660.

Johnston, two behind overnight, posted six birdies in a six-under-par 66 as the two Englishman finished 11 under. He once again emphasised how hard the course was and nearly patted himself on the back for playing good golf.

"I'm just looking forward to playing out there again", he said after an even par 72. I am also going to play a few more rounds in the next couple of weeks. "Ever since being three over through eight at the start of the week I've played some of the best golf of my life and to do it in that style at the end there capped it off. Beef really had a great round today because I was playing fantastic and thought I might have been a few more clear".

Wallace matched Johnston's four-under 32 on the front nine Sunday as the two began to build some separation from the field. "I hit some really good shots and that play-off - to hit two shots like that is exactly why I play the game".

The teams also swapped picks in the fourth and fifth rounds, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter . He's started 30 of 39 games for Green Bay, with 10 career interceptions and two touchdowns.

"I asked on 15 what the score was".

"I'm slightly frustrated, as I attempted a similar putt on the 18th during regulation play".

For Lahiri, the Hero Indian Open was a disappointment. On Sunday, however, he also displayed his scoring prowess.

Shubhankar, who had set the course record with a sensational eight-under 64 on the second day, seemed to make a good start as he fired birdies at the second and fourth holes but two double bogeys at the fifth and seventh pegged him back before he picked up a stroke at the ninth to make the turn at one-over.

"It was a disappointing day for me".

"It was a mixed bag". "I got off to a bad start at the start of the Hero Indian Open week and I must admit I tried very hard on all four days to pull it back". But these things happen. "I'd like to thank everyone for coming out to support me".
