  • UH Fertility Clinic investigating failure involving eggs and embryos

We are investigating a recent incident at our Fertility Clinic involving an unexpected temperature fluctuation with the tissue storage bank where eggs and embryos are stored in liquid nitrogen.

"At this point, we do not know the viability of all of the stored eggs and embryos, although we do know some have been impacted", said Patti DePompei, president of UH Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, in a video posted Thursday on Facebook. The viability of the eggs and embryos is unknown, the facility said in a statement.

"We are so very sorry this happened and we want to do all that we can to support our patients and families through this very hard time", DePompei said a video posted on Facebook Thursday.

'But we do know that the temperature that was measured at a portion of the tank was higher than our acceptable limits'.

DePompei said in her statement on Facebook that the hospital will go through a "deep investigation", including bringing in experts, "to ensure that this does not happen again". The equipment reportedly failed last month due to which the temperature inside the refrigerator storing the eggs became warmer than it should. The eggs and embryos the had frozen at the clinic may no longer be viable. Sometimes eggs are stored in such process for decades.

More than 2,000 embryos are believed to be compromised affecting at least 700 families, CNN reported, and the hospital said it's notifying patients with letters and phone calls and has set up a hotline for patient concerns.
