According to CHP Capt. Chris Childs, a hotline at 707-948-3331 was created for those who are concerned about the safety of friends and family at the Yountville Veterans Home. The Pathway Home, a privately run program on the veteran home's grounds, treats veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Hostage negotiators from three different agencies were trying to make contact with the suspect, the California Highway Patrol said. Authorities know his identity, he said, though it has not been disclosed yet.

Jan Thornton of Vallejo is among hundreds of relatives anxious about their loved ones at a Northern California veterans home that was locked down after reports of an active shooter. The facility is about an hour north of San Francisco.

Fransen said authorities were working to establish a secure perimeter around the facility, which is home to about 1,000 residents.
