Warner, De Kock charged after stairwell clash

  • David Warner and Quinton de Kock get in a heated exchange during the tea break on day four of the first test at Kingsmead

The sledging war between David Warner and Quinton de Kock has reached the next level, with the South African batsman's sister weighing into the saga via social media.

Crowe is also expected to meet with skippers Steve Smith and du Plessis at some point this week, imploring them to take control of their teams and ensure the next match is played in better spirits.

Warner has been issued with a level-two charge by the International Cricket Council for conduct that brings the game into disrepute, meaning he could be banned for a test if handed the most severe punishment, while de Kock has been slapped with a level-one infraction.

Australian wicketkeeper Tim Paine on Wednesday claimed that de Kock had crossed the line by making a comment about Warner's wife.

The opening batsman could face an ICC sanction for his part in the ugly stairwell incident at Kingsmead on Sunday which shattered cricket's unofficial rule of 'what happens on the field, stays on the field'. We want to play a way that gets us success and for us we've just got to make sure we don't cross the line, that's the key.

The first Test finished on Monday, but Australia's 118-run victory in Durban was marred by incredible leaked footage of Warner being restrained by teammates as he raged at de Kock.

"I think Davey's got to find somewhere in between that".

South African manager Mohammed Moosajee also blamed Warner.

It was the second heated incident involving Warner, who, along with Nathan Lyon, could be scrutinised over their conduct in celebrating the run-out of AB de Villiers earlier in the Test series opener.

Former England test captain Michael Vaughan, however, suggested Warner's rumoured track-record of aggressive sledging means there is no defence for his reaction to de Kock's reported taunt about his wife.

"As I went past de Kock he said what he said and luckily I suppose I was there in between", Paine said.

"I'm sure the captains will chat and the coaches will chat and we'll get away to play the game", he added.

"I'm certainly not sitting here complaining about it".

"Australian teams have generally been at the top of the pile, not every minute of those times, but generally they're a very competitive, world-class team, and some would say they don't need to do that. Have a look at you, you sook". Smith made it clear that Australia's aggressive approach on the field would remain intact.

"There was nothing we said that was inappropriate".
