These Are The First 3 Cities Where AT&T Will Roll Out 5G

  • AT&T to roll out mobile 5G network in Dallas, Atlanta and Waco, Texas, by the end of this year

The upshot is that although AT&T's initial 5G service won't operate in quite the same way that most wireless customers are used to, it does give AT&T the ability to claim a 5G "first" in a highly competitive wireless market.

AT&T's mobile 5G will be standards-based, and at least initally, it'll use millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum. Further, the network even said they are working hard on their schedule to bring 5G to end consumers and will be launching more 5G capable devices and smartphones in the coming years. I guess we will be able to live stream 4K 360 degree content from our smartphones!

According to a post on AT&T's newsroom, "parts of" Dallas, Atlanta, and Waco, Texas will be among the first cities to be serviced with true 5G speeds.

Telecommunications experts estimate that 5G speeds will be about 10 times faster than 4G, which is presently the mobile standard. Beyond Waco, the only cities the mobile giant had yet announced were Dallas and Atlanta. The new 5G lab in Austin will allow the carrier to conduct tests standards-based 5G including Advanced 5G NR Testbed Systems.

In between it was a battle, it was nerve-wracking getting back to number one. It was a great week, but I just came up short today. If I play well, good things will happen.

Today's press release also touts AT&T's software defined network (SDN) and edge computing initiatives, which the carrier said will be critical to its 5G plans.

After promising earlier this year that it would be among the first domestic wireless providers to begin rolling out its next-generation 5G network, AT&T this week officially announced the first three US cities in line to be blanketed with the carrier's multi-gigabit 5G network by the end of 2018.

Previously, the No. 2 carrier in the USA said it expected 5G technology to deliver speeds between 10 and 100 times faster than today's average 4G LTE connectivity. There's a good chance major hardware makers will announced some of the first 5G devices next week at Mobile World Congress.
