Moscow, Feb 15 Five Russian citizens were likely killed in a US-led coalition bombing on pro-regime Syrian fighters last week, Moscow said today, acknowledging non-military casualties in the attack for the first time. Several Russians died in Deir Ezzor that day, according to groups representing them.

Russian news reports say at least several private Russian military contractors have been killed by a US strike in Syria.

We review the key events in Syria, including France stating it will hit Syria if chemical weapons are used, the Syrian government undermining the main outcome of Sochi, and the Kremlin saying it had no information on Russian mercenaries killed in coalition strikes.

Bloomberg wrote Tuesday that two Russian sources had reported more than 200 soldiers, "mostly Russians", had died in the U.S. attack.

No US or SDF forces were killed in either attack, the Pentagon told Business Insider.

The response by the United States was in part due to the "presence of a detachment of USA military "advisers" within the largely Kurdish rebel stronghold" according to the Fraser Coast Chronicle; the publication added that the Pentagon "states this was a well-known fact to Russian and Syrian forces".

What was never disputed is the fast-changing, often confusing nature of a battlefield in which forces of multiple countries are bumping up against one another, raising the prospect of violent collisions.

Moscow has released evidence showing that United States forces stationed in Dayr al-Zawr's border regions and in Jordan have been collaborating with Daesh and other militants through providing intelligence about Syrian and Russian forces.

Pro-regime forces began advancing toward the USA -backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and their US advisers near Al Tabiyeh, Syria, on Saturday, firing mortars and small-arms as they moved.

Russian Federation has repeatedly accused the United States of trying to hamper a Syrian full victory against Daesh, a Takfiri terrorist group that is on its last legs in eastern Syria and in neighboring Iraq. For more than three hours, American F-15E attack planes, B-52 strategic bombers, AC-130 gunships, Apache attack helicopters and Reaper drones fired on the attacking ground force, which Harrigian said was advancing under covering fire from artillery, mortars, rockets and tank rounds.

In troubling news for Putin, however, the death toll from the incident, already about five times more than Russia's official losses since it entered the war in 2015, is still rising, according to one mercenary commander. The ministry added that they came under attack while conducting a reconnaissance operation that was not coordinated with the Russian side.

At least seven civilians were killed in airstrikes carried out by Russian aircraft in Syria's northwestern Idlib province, local civil defense officials said Wednesday.

"It was self-defense. Obviously, we are not getting engaged in the Syrian civil war", Secretary of Defense James Mattis said of the USA strikes over the weekend.

And responding to a further BBC question, the spokesman said: " And, of course, you have to realise that many countries of the world have quite large numbers of our compatriots - of Russians - and, of course, it's hard to have detailed data.

Macron told reporters on Tuesday evening France "will strike the place where they are launched or where they are prepared". A spokesman for the group said there had been "substantial losses" inflicted upon "paramilitary structures with ties to Russian Federation".
